The State Coastal Conservancy is funding the Manhattan Dune Restoration project through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and California Climate Investments-cap and trade dollars at work. The Manhattan Beach Dune Restoration Project will enhance approximately 3 acres of the existing dunes on Bruce’s Beach in Manhattan Beach from 36th Street to 23rd Street, across approximately 0.6 miles of coastline. Partnering with the City of Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, and California State Coastal Conservancy, TBF plans to begin project implementation in fall 2021. The project is currently in the planning phase. The goal of this dune restoration project is to increase the resiliency of the beach to improve coastal protection, while engaging the community and visitors. When dunes are allowed to form and create natural features, away from recreation areas, they provide a cost-effective buffer of protection from sea level rise and storm erosion. The restoration project will include removing non-native plants, seeding and planting native vegetation, strategic installation of various types of fencing, and installation of educational features like interpretive signage. This demonstration site will serve as a model for the region, showing that heavy recreational use of beaches and meaningful habitat restoration are not incompatible goals. It will evaluate “soft” nature-based, low-cost living shoreline protection from sea level rise and storms while providing public benefits and enhancing natural resource values.Project implementation:Phase 1: restoration of northern dune (36th Street to 28th Street) and southern dune (27th Street to 23rd Street) sections, approximately 3 acres, (except vicinity of 28th Street).Phase 2 (future phase): the restoration of the vicinity of 28th Street, 0.5 acres, following the completion of the Manhattan Strand 28th Street Subsurface Infiltration Trench Project. | 01/19/2022 02:30:06 | |||
