Já o IDH-M de 0,798 (PNUD / 2010), considerado alto. Está localizado em uma zona de transição entre os biomas Mata Atlântica e Cerrado. É o quarto município mais populoso do estado, com população de 687.357 habitantes (IBGE, 2020), portanto, uma capital regional. A cidade é um importante polo industrial do estado de São Paulo e do Brasil, sendo que sua produção industrial chega a mais de 120 países, atingindo um PIB acima dos R$ 32 bilhões, o décimo nono maior do país, a frente de capitais como São Luís, Belém, Vitória, Natal e Florianópolis. As principais bases de sua economia são os setores de indústria, comércio e serviços, com mais 22 mil empresas instaladas, sendo mais de duas mil delas indústrias. Paralelamente à forte expansão econômica, Sorocaba também desenvolve diversas ações integradas que estão melhorando a qualidade de vida, como um plano de bicicleta com mais de 120 quilômetros de ciclovias, sistema público de bicicletas, o programa de limpeza do rio Sorocaba, plantações de árvores em matas ciliares participação da comunidade, ampliação de parques, projetos de educação ambiental para todas as idades, além da construção de unidades habitacionais para a retirada de famílias de áreas de risco. Participa da campanha "Construindo Cidades Resilientes: Minha Cidade Está se Preparando", a Estratégia Internacional para a Redução de Desastres (ISDR), a Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). Em 2013, alcançou o 1º lugar no ranking do programa Município Verde Azul, divulgado pelo governo do estado de São Paulo, que classificou as cidades por desempenho ambiental em dez áreas. Também em 2013, foi uma das cidades escolhidas pela ONU para participar do projeto Urban LEDS (Urban Low Emission Development Strategies), criado pelo UN-Habitat e pela Comissão Européia, que tem como principal implementador o ICLEI - Governos Locais pela Sustentabilidade, ao qual está em execução a 2a fase, subsidiando o município com assistência técnica e financeira para o desenvolvimento de iniciativas para reduzir as emissões de carbono nas áreas urbanas, o que já contribuiu com a elaboração da Política Municipal sobre Mudanças Climáticas, as estruturas de governança com a sociedade, e com a elaboração do 2° inventário de GEE (validado por instituição independente) e análise de risco climático, que subsidiarão o plano de ação climática.01/20/2022 02:27:05
