Climate Hazards and VulnerabilityClimate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment2.0aPlease select the primary process or methodology used to undertake the risk and vulnerability assessment of your city.2Description1Risk assessment methodologyThe assessment "Paris's strenghs and weaknesses facing climate change" has been made in 4 different steps in 2012-2014.1- First : a work has been carried out with the French national meteorological and climate organisation (Météo-France). Météo-France has characterised the Parisian climate by providing elements about past climate, and about projections of a potential future climate throughout the 21st century in Paris. As for evaluating the physical risks, we made some research on how the City of Paris has tackled previous extreme events (2003 heatwave, 1910 river flood, 1999 storms...) and we compiled some information on diverse research projects (future water availability, modelling of urban heat island effects for Paris...).2- Second, the city was helped by a private consulting firm to lead 60 interviews (40 institutions and partners, 11 sectors) in order to assess the vulnerabilities and opportunities for the city in a context of climate change and resource depletion. 3- Third, an assessment of the priorities was made with an experimental ranking method by the consulting firm: the vulnerability of 7 systems according to 10 climate hazards and the scarcity of 4 resources was assessed and ranked in this study. 4 - Finally, the results of the study were summarised into 25 short briefing sheets : 8 climate related risk, 4 resources depletion, 13 vulnerable sectors for Paris. The city is currently working on the update of this study which should be available in late 20201 or beggining 2022. Vulnerability of systems will be reassessed regarding more recent climate scenarios from the IPCC, and regarding new contexts and progresses which has been made since then. Air quality will be considered as a new resource. 3 systems will be assessed more deeply (insurance, climate migrations, important events - sports, cultural, etc.).01/20/2022 02:27:05

During the pandemic, the City through the Department of Environmental Services conducted a year-round webinar series this CY 2021 to take the City’s environmental advocacies a step further into the digital world. We invited resource speakers/experts providing technical knowledge and information on how to conserve and preserve our environment through simple ways.
