OpportunitiesFinance and Economic Opportunities6.7Has your city received/secured funding for any climate projects (e.g. energy efficiency, renewable energy, low emission vehicles, waste management, flood defence etc.) from an International Financial Institution (e.g. World Bank, Asian Development Bank, etc.)?2Comment1Funding received/securedThe City secured funding from AFD (Agence Française de Développement), through the CiCliA European facility, to finance two climate change/resilience studies on behalf of the City of Cape Town (2017-2019). The studies focused on 1) developing a sustainable energy service for low-income households: the key research question underpinning this study was: “what is the model which delivers the best possible energy services which are sustainable, affordable (for both the City, the consumers and Eskom), safe, clean, offers choice and flexibility and supports inclusivity ; 2) map vulnerabilities to and risks of climate change - Climate Change Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment.Other recent donor funding (although not financial institution/development bank related) includes the “Greening The City of Cape Town’s Infrastructure Strategy” project which is UK government funding, via their PACT facility (UK PACT), for technical assistance on “greening the CCT infrastructure strategy”. It focuses on ensuring that the City’s new infrastructure strategy is responsive to City climate response priorities, and it runs from May 2021-March 2022; £400 000.GreenCape (City funded SPV) is the primary implementing partner, drawing on resources from PwC. The project aims to support the operationalisation of the City’s infrastructure strategy which incorporates long-term plans for transport and energy amongst other sectors. Infrastructure sector is globally known to be a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, even though it remains a critical driver for service delivery and economic development in many geographies including South Africa. However, through the incorporation of a climate impact and resilience lens in identifying the capital projects for accelerated preparation and innovative financing, the infrastructure portfolio implementation is expected to result in significant emissions reduction. The prioritisation process will impart premium to projects that offer environmental sustainability and are in alignment with the City’s climate and energy action plan thereby supporting the long-term emissions reduction target for the infrastructure sector01/20/2022 02:27:05
