With a population of approximately 28000 inhabitants, Assisi appears as a town with a strong rural character, dominated by the historical city center, situated at the base of Subasio Mount, and several municipality’s hamlets, as e.g. Santa Maria degli Angeli, Petrignano and Rivotorto. The main geographical and territorial data of Assisi are:Geographical coordinates: 43°4'12"36 N - 12°37'2"64 EElevation: 424 m.a.s.l.Population: 28352 (2008 year)Area: 187,19 km2Population density: 151,46 inhabitants/km2The historical city center is characterized by a large number of important monuments that are always destinations of religious tourism and pilgrimages, the most notable of which is the Basilica of San Francesco, followed by the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Cathedral of San Rufino. For what concerns Assisi’s building stock, the Istat 2011 Census on Population and Buildings indicates that the total buildings of the Municipality of Assisi are 9983. Among them, 7798 are residential buildings, 1810 belong to the commercial, productive and tertiary sectors and, finally, 375 are not utilized. The infrastructural system is composed by a main road axis orientated in NO-SE direction, from which departs the secondary roads system. The railway runs alongside the main road axis and it passes through the hamlet of Santa Maria degli Angeli. There are lots of cycle tracks that start from the historic city center of Assisi and connected to other urban settlements, as e.g. Gubbio, Spoleto, Spello and Gualdo Tadino.01/20/2022 02:27:05
