Governance and Data Management | Governance | 1.7 | Please provide information specifically on the impact of the COVID-19 economic response on climate action in your city and synergies between COVID-19 recovery interventions and climate action. | 3 | Explanation | 1 | Response | Cape Town’s Covid-19 response (and budget) focused on increasing the city’s resilience to shocks and stressors with a specific focus on addressing the city's existing socio economic challenges including poverty, access to service delivery, informality and existing health issues. These are the same vulnerabilities that exacerbates the impacts of climate change in Cape Town and reduce the ability of communities to respond effectively and build resilience. The city's Covid-19 response was implemented through actions outlined in the City of Cape Town Resilience Strategy, which is the overarching strategy for protecting the City of Cape Town metropolitan government, its households and businesses against various shocks and stressors that threaten the wellbeing of the city. The actions include strengthening social systems though addressing food security, water and sanitation supply and access, improved service delivery, shelter for the homeless and healthcare. The vulnerability viewer that was used to direct line department actions in a targeted way during the pandemic, is expected to be repurposed to be used for climate change related shocks such as flooding and heatwaves. While actions related to the City's Water Programme were re-assessed and delayed due to realigned budgets, specific water supply actions and sanitation services to increase the resilience of the most vulnerable to the virus spread and lockdown regulations were implemented in townships, informal settlements and among the homeless. These include actions such as installing Jojo tanks, delivering water using water trucks and increasing the frequency of sanitation services and maintenance. Prioritizing the most vulnerable groups and those with existing health care issues, the city increased the capacity of its existing health care facilities and services in order to continue to providing existing services for all health care needs including Covid19 testing. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | ||
