273829Cities 2021202150578City of Windsor, ONCanadaNorth America2. Climate Hazards and VulnerabilityClimate Hazards2.3aPlease report on how climate change impacts health outcomes and health services in your city.7Please explain3Since 2017, the percentage of mosquito pools that tested positive for WNV has increased in Windsor-Essex. During the surveillance period spanning from May to October of 2018, 26 (2.7%) positive pools of WNV were detected in mosquito traps, which is almost double the percentage of pools that tested positive in 2013. Furthermore, exotic species, such as Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus which are vectors of Zika virus have been discovered in the region since 2016. South western Ontario is an established area for Lyme disease. There were 18 cases of Lyme disease in WEC between 2016 and 2018. Lyme disease active surveillance performed in the Fall 2018, identified black legged ticks. This recent finding was alarming since in the previous 3 years (2015-2017), no black legged ticks were captured and no ticks in general were captured after the month of May. Lone star ticks, whose bite can lead to alpha-gal meat allergy, were also found during active surveillance in 2017. These have also been found consistently in the region through public tick submissions from 2015 to 2018.01/20/2022 02:27:05

AdaptationAdaptation Actions3.0Please describe the main actions you are taking to reduce the risk to, and vulnerability of, your city’s infrastructure, services, citizens, and businesses from climate change as identified in the Climate Hazards section.8Action description and implementation progress37Anti larval MeasuresPeri domestic work:Peri domestic activities have carried throughout the city. areas around the year at weekly intervals. Ongoing construction sites, outdoor water bodies, underground tanks, overhead tanks, ground tanks, permanent water bodies, and seepages of the canals were routinely vigil for breeding of mosquitoes by our health workers throughout the year. These all-breeding spots have been treated with suitable insecticides like MLO, Biolarvicides & Temephose 50%.Intra domestic work:Intra Domestic survey activities have been carried out for intra domestic breeding spots like an underground tank, ground tank, overhead tank, barrels, drum, earthen pot, etc. in buildings including residential houses, commercial complexes, High-rise apartments. All positive spots have been treated with appropriate insecticides and health education awareness created for the community.Biological MeasuresThe efforts for the reduction of breeding sites by adopting biological measures were also undertaken. Around 53 hatcheries in different zones were established for larvivorous fish and fishes released in permanent water bodies like ponds, fountains, permanent waterlogging, rivers, etc.Parasitological Measures:Active surveillance, as well as passive surveillance, has been carried out on regular basis as per the guidelines of the Urban Malaria scheme for early detection and complete treatment. In active surveillance, 489 surveillance workers have surveyed houses door-to-door in areas by the fortnightly interval. For passive surveillance 39 Urban Health Centres have been established in areas.Night survey and MDA program (Filaria):Night surveillance is for the detection of Filariasis. Because microfilaria (parasite of Filariasis) releases in the circulatory system from lymph in the human body at night (relaxing condition), the surveillance of filaria is carried out at 6 to 8 pm. All positive cases have been fully treated with D.E.C. tablets. Chronic cases have been monitored under morbidity management in SMC clinic. Every year in the Dec month, 98% of the population is covered with the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) program. DEC and Albendazole tab. are administrated to all the people (exclude less than 2 y. children and pregnant women). Dengue/Chikungunya Survey:For scrutiny of Dengue/Chikungunya, Sera samples of suspected cases from Civil, SIMMER, and private hospitals have collected and sent to for serological investigation of IgM antibodies. Containment measures were taken at the premises of suspected dengue cases, immediately intensified intra domestic surveillance to searching of Aedes infestation besides space spray around 200 meters radius of the house.Plague Surveillance Activity:Since 1994 there has a plague surveillance unit established in Vector-Borne Diseases Control Department. After that, there were regular traps laid in the evening to collect rodents and de-flea in the laboratory. Rat burrows in High flea index areas were insufflations by Malathion 5 % dust.Entomological Activities: (Mosquito Collection)Entomological activity is the monitoring of surveillance and anti-larval activity, which is carried out during the year. Insect collectors collect mosquitoes in particular houses in selected areas on a weekly basis. Culex parous females from collected mosquitoes have been dissected for detection of microfilaria. Special entomological surveillance was made for the collection of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes and sent for the investigation of virus isolation at N.I.V. Pune. And containment measures are taken in the affected areas.Indoor Residual Spraying:In Indoor Residual Spraying, the specified insecticide is spraying on the surface of walls of houses in high-Risk Areas during the month of Aug every year. This can be helpful to control adult mosquitoes in areas during the monsoon, the pick period of malaria (Aug-Oct).01/20/2022 02:27:05
