Adaptation | Adaptation Planning Process | 3.5 | Please explain how your city has addressed vulnerable groups through transformative action. | 0 | 0 | In 2020, Council received State and Federal Government funding to build resilience and recovery from the bushfires. The funding was used for various projects, but one component was to establish a designated Disaster Resilience Officer who would be the spokesperson for the community. As part of this funding a working group was established with key community members and an officer from a neighbouring LGA, to work through and implement programs to mitigate climate risk. This group will receive upskilling and training opportunities in the near future to improve emergency management and psychological first aid skills. Council's Disaster Resilience Officer has also consulted with various community organisations regarding vulnerable community groups, to ensure that these members of the community are engaged with on climate risks. Community representatives in isolated communities were established as conduits for information during an emergency, as well as plans for street meets around the Shire to build neighbourhood networks and connection. This will help ensure elderly or vulnerable residents are taken into account during an emergency. In 2021, Council will host a number of workshops to engage the community, particularly vulnerable, isolated, and indigenous members, and build education and awareness around climate risks for better resilience. An on-ground homelessness survey also took place earlier in 2021 to assess this vulnerable community, involving in-person conversations and assessments. Various homelessness programs have been developed by Council to improve this issue in the Shire, including two designated Officers to implement these programs and liaise with this group. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | ||||
