Since 1996, there have been 69 winter weather events according to NOAA, most of which have caused damage to property. According to NOAA, there have been 74 injuries and no deaths. The total amount of property damage done by winter storm events equates to a total of $17,770,000. All County assets can be considered at risk from severe winter storms. This includes 100 percent of the County population and all buildings and infrastructure. Damages primarily occur as a result of cold temperatures, heavy snow or ice and sometimes strong winds. Due to their regular occurrence, these storms are considered hazards only when they result in damage to specific structures or cause disruption to traffic, communications, electric power, or other utilities. A winter storm can adversely affect roadways, utilities, business activities, and can cause loss of life, frostbite and freezing conditions.The freezing and thaw cycle throughout the winter can also have an impact on infrastructure. The GGH is one of the fastest growing regions in North America, and the largest urban region in Canada.Burlington is one of four local municipalities within the Regional Municipality of Halton, including the Towns of Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. Burlington's location is distinguished by its accessibility to major urban centres such as Toronto and Hamilton, its proximity to the United States and its natural features. Services provided by the City of Burlington include community and transportation planning; public transit; fire prevention and response; roads, parks & forestry (maintenance); recreation, culture and libraries; and environmental sustainability. Halton Region is responsible for delivering regional services such as water, wastewater and waste management, public health, social services, community housing and police, among others.Conservation Halton is the local conservation authority, a watershed management agency, mandated to ensure the conservation, restoration and responsible management of water, land and natural habitats through programs. Its vision is to sustain a healthy watershed with clean streams, vigorous forests, abundant green space and balanced growth that results in strong livable communities by working with the regional government and the local municipalities.The public school boards are separate entities from the local governments and include the Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board. McMaster University (Hamilton) has established a satellite campus in Burlington, the DeGroote School of Business, and Brock University (St. Catharines) is also in the planning stages of setting up a satellite campus in the community.Burlington comprises 185 sq km of land with south half comprising an urban community and the north half as rural, including farmland and protected by the Greenbelt and the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. A natural heritage system connects the urban and rural communities to Lake Ontario and Burlington Bay through numerous creeks and woodlands.The population of Burlington is 183,000 as confirmed in the last census by Statistics Canada in 2016 (updated population from 2021 census has not yet been published). The local economic base is very diversified. Food processing is among the leading employers, along with software development, advanced manufacturing, financial services, and steel and metal fabrication businesses.City council approved a Strategic Plan in 2015 with a 25 year horizon to 2040 with the following vision for the city: Where People, Nature and Business Thrive. City council declared a climate emergency and approved a Climate Action Plan in 2020 with a target to become a net carbon neutral community by 2050. The city also has a Corporate Energy & Emissions Management Plan with a target for city operations to be net carbon neutral by 2040. Lastly, the city is in progress to complete a Climate Adaptation Plan by mid-2022. This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains a subset of the related full cities dataset, covering Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Action questions for publicly disclosing cities in 2021. The platform is still open and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions.
