315564Cities 20212021840371Falköpings kommunSwedenEurope0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeFalköpings kommun is a municipality located in Västra Götaland county in Sweden, with an area of 1,045 km2 and just above 33 000 inhabitants. Approximately 50% of the population live in the town of Falköping, which is located in the middle of the municipality, while the remaining 50% live in the surrounding countryside or in smaller towns. Most of the area is covered by agricultural land or nature land. The municipality has no connection to the sea since it is not located on the coast. Freshwater lakes or other water in the municipality cover only 20.89 km2. Falköping is known for its table mountains and its special geology, which provides conditions for many diverse nature types as well as an exciting cultural history. Falköping is situated along the rail line between Stockholm and Gothenburg, the two largest cities in Sweden. This location offers good opportunities in terms of commuting, trade and industry. For the last 20 years, Falköping municipality has worked strategically to cease the opportunity of becoming a sustainable logistics hub in western Sweden through the establishment of the Skaraborg Logistic Centre. Based on the geographical location, the municipality has reserved land near the railway to create Sweden's largest "dry port" with terminals and train track connections for transportation of goods on the railway with direct connection to the Port of Gothenburg. For transports to and from Northern Europe, the business community has been provided with conditions to use the railway as the standard choice, which means that heavy fossil goods transport has been replaced by sustainable train transport with reduced climate impact as a result. This example shows that small municipalities can succeed with large sustainability investments, by identifying the unique conditions provided by the local geography and making the choice to believe in the possibilities. As Falköping is a rural municipality, a large part of the greenhouse gas emissions consist of methane and nitrous oxide from agriculture and forestry. It is important for Falköping to find nature-based solutions for becoming a carbon sink through its agricultural land, forest land and wetlands. Emissions of carbon dioxide alone in Falköping in 2018 amounted to close to 82,000 tonnes, of which almost 70% was from transport. The transport figure consists of the amount of greenhouse gas in the fossil fuels that were refueled in Falköping municipality in 2018. Many refueling vehicles were only passing through the municipality in order to reach Skaraborg Logistic Centre where they changed to train transport. The vision of Falköping municipality is "The Good Life" for all its current and future inhabitants. Falköping profiles itself in sustainable development, where social sustainability is seen as the main focus to achieve, using economic sustainability as a means to get there and using ecological sustainability for defining the conditions to stay within and in balance with. Falköping works actively to achieve Agenda 2030 on the local level and links its work on climate change issues with the Paris Agreement. The Municipal Board's committee for social sustainability is tasked to follow the work on climate change mitigation and adaptation from a social perspective, to ensure that the transition to a "Fossil Free Falköping 2030" benefits the well-being of all residents in the long term. Through international immigration, Falköping has an increasingly diverse population in terms of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The ambition is to create a stable and dynamic society where all inhabitants feel involved and have the power to control their own economy, work, living conditions, culture, education, recreation, health, security, etc. In complex future issues such as climate change, Falköping makes an active choice to work co-creatively to increase participation and find solutions that work from many different perspectives, especially involving children and youth.01/19/2022 02:30:06
