Em 1869, instalou-se a primeira fábrica de tecidos de algodão, sendo a primeira movida a vapor da Província de São Paulo. Mas foi só a partir de 1950, que várias fábricas começaram a se instalar na cidade. Possui clima tropical seco, quando a estação seca é mais prolongada que a estação úmida, e temperaturas elevadas, em média 20°C. Seu bioma predominante é a Mata Atlântica, sendo que restam 8% da cobertura remanescente nativa. Tem como principais Rios: Tietê, Itaim Mirim, Itaim Guaçu, Braiaiá, Varejão, Gomes, Pirapitingui, Brochado, Guaraú e outros. Possui cinco Áreas de Proteção Ambiental: APA Tietê, APA Braiaiá, APA Cidade Nova, APA Botuxim e APA Pedregulho. O relevo do município é de colina suave e nas regiões limítrofes, algumas altitudes. Situa-se entre o planalto cristalino e o sedimentar. Possui vestígios de cidade arqueozóica.
