We are situated on the coast and have two catchment areas for Brunswick River and Belongil Creek - both these rivers have the potential to flood and cause inundation in surrounding residential areas. Storm surges and sea level rise could cause major impacts to coastal residents and infrastructure, as well as impacting tourism due to lack of sand on beaches - a key recreational area for Byron Shire. Fire - due to climate change's affect on rainfall, in 2019 Byron Shire experienced extended drought following by extreme bushfire conditions in a usually wet rainforest environment. One of the areas affected was within a heritage listed Gondwanan rainforest reserve leading to major impacts on biodiversity. Surrounding homes were also evacuated and air quality was reduced for many weeks. Severe storm/rain intensity - Byron Shire expects to experience flash flooding and cyclones more frequently and intensely in the future. This is currently an annual occurrence and can sometimes occur multiple times a year. This causes continued damage to roads, strain on flooding infrastructure, damage to property and impacts on agriculture and biodiversity.01/19/2022 02:30:06
