For example, by-products of food waste include the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it, but food that goes to the landfill also rots which releases harmful gasses including methane.Ensuring that the food system across County Durham focuses on supporting health and well-being, sustainability, climate change, and food waste is very important in supporting the food environment for the future. Cutting down on salt, red and processed meats, and saturated fats, while increasing intake of fruit, whole-grains, nuts, seeds, and vegetables, is likely to have wide-ranging health benefits. Diets high in salt and saturated fat, but low in fish, fruit, vegetable, and fibre increase the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.Consuming foods and drinks that are high in fat and non-milk extrinsic sugars (NMES - often referred to as added sugars but also including sugars in fruit juice and honey) too frequently can contribute to excess energy intake and weight gain. Excess weight and obesity carry many negative effects on health. The effort to increase the health benefits of our food by avoiding foods such as red meat, we are also reducing the carbon footprint of our diets. The City has invested over R140 million into these retrofits, reaching approximately 8000 households (another 3100 households were retrofitted in independent projects). This largescale retrofit project has health, social, and environmental benefits and will improve the resilience of low income households and vulnerable communities. Through the retrofitting of ceilings, the project will improve indoor air quality, temperatures, reduce condensation and mould and as a result reduce electricity consumption. In terms of health benefits, ceilings provide increased temperatures indoors over longer periods in winter as well as a decrease in condensation and draughts which contribute to the affliction of respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis, colds and flu. This project reflects the City’s overall approach to climate action which is designed to realise co-benefits such as improved resource security, reduced costs, improved air quality, improved quality of life, sustainable development, long term fiscal efficiency and the protection of lives, livelihoods, the economy, ecosystems and investments. The City requires funding for approximately another 40 000 houses (can be broken up into phases).The stage of project development and total investment cost needed for the first two projects are difficult to capture: all of these projects have been implemented, but they are ongoing and the budgets required for them may change over time.No adaptation projects seeking funding have been listed this year, as the climate change adaptation branch within the City is still in the process of identifying and packaging distinct projects, which should be ready for future reporting with the finalization of the Climate Action Plan.01/20/2022 02:27:05
