The source is quality groundwater. More than 2.000 km of water supply and sewerage network stretches under the streets of Ljubljana. In the warm period of the year, in COL the residents can pour water from more than 30 Ljubljana drinking fountains. The groundwater source is located in the immediate vicinity of the city and even below it. The quality of water in watercourses in the area of ​​the COL is highly dependent on the water level. The Ljubljana Central Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest in Slovenia, with an average of 80.000 m3 of wastewater treated daily. Approximately 830 km of pipelines were built for the drainage of municipal water, and 330 km for the drainage of rainwater. In Ljubljana, more than 93% of the population in settlements with a dense urban character has been connected to the sewerage system, and COL will certainly continue to connect to the sewerage system outside settlements with a compact urban character. In COL, drinking water is distributed through the central water supply system, and in suburban settlements also through smaller and private water supply systems. The water source of the central water supply system is used in five waterworks: Kleče, Hrastje, Jarški prod, Šentvid and Brest. Smaller water supply systems are fed from their own, local water sources, where the water source is groundwater captured in the form of springs or wells. Unlike smaller central water supply systems, water in smaller water supply systems is chlorinated. Each inhabitant consumes between 115 and 150 liters of drinking water per day, and taking into account industrial and other uses, consumption increases to around 200 liters. Immediately after use, drinking water becomes municipal wastewater, which together with industrial and precipitation wastewater travels from the majority of urban areas to the public sewer. The wastewater is treated in a treatment plant before being released into the environment, where it is mechanically and biologically treated, controlled and in accordance with regulations, returned to the natural environment; thus concludes the water cycle.
