The water section of the 2014 Sustainable Providence Plan aimed to protect and create natural buffers, urban forest and green infrastructure, as well as protecting drinking water at its source. The Office of Sustainability continually tracks the annual net gain in trees and the number of green infrastructure projects installed throughout the city. A 2016 update to the Sustainable Providence Plan committed Providence to addressing the impacts of climate change in accordance with the Global Covenant of Mayors. The climate actions added to the Sustainable Providence annual report included assessing the vulnerability of the port and the surrounding industrial areas, engaging large, long-term property owners to meet climate (mitigation and) resilience goals, and including climate resilience in the Capital Improvement Planning process. The 2019 Climate Justice Plan set additional adaptation targets, including establishing Green Justice Zones in frontline communities, creating a network of resilience hubs, expanding community facilities for cooling, developing a long-term climate resilience and adaptation plan, ensuring the port is resilient to climate change, and increasing investments that support a circular, regenerative economy.In addition, the Office of Sustainability hosted a climate change resiliency lab in February 2016. A Design and Resilience Team (DART) comprising of architects, designers, and city planners from around the country along with City leadership and roughly 200 community participants, gathered for three days to identify strategies for making Providence more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
