The City restructured its waste collection and recycling system in 2017 to make it easier for residents to recycle and divert more waste from the landfill. Green Camino, a local composting service, is also working to enhance the amount of organic resources composted in the community. There is an opportunity here to expand services throughout the community and within local government operations, which are currently being discussed. Additionally, the green waste produced by residences and from city landscaping is composted locally. Hoosier to Hoosier Sale: The H2H Sale is an annual reuse program that diverts reusable items created during the transitional movement of students and prevents additional resource consumption by selling collected items back to students and community members. H2H brings together hundreds of volunteers, raises money for local nonprofits, and provides affordable goods for our community. IU Sustain's efforts, in partnership with the City of Bloomington Sustainability, Cutters Soccer Club, and The Warehouse have saved more than 432 tons of waste from Bloomington landfills since 2009. This effort aims to address the Bloomington Sustainability Action Plan’s goal to divert 65% of waste from landfill by 2023. Going forward, SustainIU will be searching for additional diversion opportunities for large item pickups from the City, as well as enhancing communication and outreach to diverse networks throughout the community. The program has also conducted a SWOT analysis to determine future areas of improvement.
