Pittsburgh is the principal city of the 22nd largest metropolitan area in the United States, with over 2.3 million people in 14,780 km2. Pittsburgh sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers join to form the Ohio River. With an abundance of natural resources and fossil fuel reserves, Pittsburgh first rose to prominence as the Steel City, at one point producing 25 million tons of steel per year (60% of total US steel production). When the steel industry collapsed in the 1980s, Pittsburgh lost half of its population (which has only recently stabilized) and was left with legacy environmental risk factors such as acid mine drainage, poor environmental air quality, combined sewer overflows, abandoned steel mills, vacant land, acres of brownfield sites, deforestation, eroded river banks, landslides, water pollution, and an electric grid still fueled in part by coal. Pittsburgh’s second renaissance launched the transition from an industrial city to an economy based on higher education, health care, and technology. Air quality and water quality have improved substantially. Residents generally enjoy a high quality of life with low costs of living, but there is a need to address systematic issues that disadvantage certain populations. This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2021. The platform is still open and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions.
