The carcinogen, benzene has been identified as a definite cancer risk in the city. This project was initiated to reduce benzene levels. First, the city created an email alert system, Rapid Alert Benzene Information: Time Sensitive (RABITS), to notify staff when elevated concentrations occur at fixed site monitors. These alerts provide action level recommendations for various concentrations based upon a novel toxicological assessment of the potential dangers of this chemical. This work informs overnight and weekend mobile benzene surveillance efforts to reduce the emission of this chemical in Houston. Night and weekend surveillance had not been conducted previously. This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2021. The platform is still open and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions.
