A framework for conducting detailed risk and vulnerability assessments of critical infrastructure across all asset classes would be included as an essential early action in the implementation of this program to help meet the targets articulated in HalifACT. Lack of proactive action and investment will increase the risk to existing and planned critical infrastructure.Halifax Water has developed a framework, using the AWWA J-100 RAMCAP standard, for assessing vulnerability, quantifying risk, and planning adaptation measures as part of their Infrastructure Master Plan. Two asset classes (Water Supply Plants & Water Supply Dams) are currently undergoing pilot assessments and next steps will see the framework rolled out to other Halifax Water asset classes. To develop a climate-informed water supply strategy, Halifax Water’s first Climate Change Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Pilot Project for all water supply plants and dams will be completed during summer 2021. The project will help develop climate change risk assessment methodology and identify climate threats and vulnerability specific to Halifax’s water supply.The Extreme Water Level Mapping Project aims to update our coastal flooding maps for all of HRM using the latest sea-level rise projections and newly acquired LiDAR-derived basemaps. Previously, the Municipality has mapped coastal flood hazards around the city centre, however the new maps will identify areas across all of HRM that are vulnerable to extreme water levels. The next steps of the Extreme Water Level Mapping Project are to continue working with climatologists and flood modelers to update extreme water level projections for the entire municipality, use the updated projections to create hazard maps, and make these maps available to the public. The finalized maps will help to inform the By-law Simplification Project and future planning, development, and adaptation within the municipality.01/20/2022 02:27:05
