The biodigesters will help manage municipal solids and higher strength wastes. We installed additional equipment to refine biogas produced by to create renewable natural gas (RNG) which can be sold to generate revenue. The biodigester will include 3 digesters, combined heat and power and a phosphorus recovery system. Construction is expected to be complete and the full system operating in early 2022. Our project includes the largest membrane system in the country and is the first to combine several elements (biodigester, RNG, phosphorus recovery). Once fully functional, it will generate around 125,000 MMBtu’s of renewable natural gas (RNG) per year, with approximately 90% being used for transportation fuel (equivalent to approximately 1 million gallons of gasoline, which equals over 22 million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle) and 10% being used in DTE Energy’s voluntary carbon offset program for natural gas residential customers. This project will achieve a variety of benefits including decreasing local air pollution by our local partner burning the RNG instead of conventional compressed natural gas; increasing revenue generation by selling RINs and recovered phosphorus; and reducing carbon / greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change. Our utility partner, DTE Energy, will sell some of the RNG we produce in our biodigester in their CleanVision Natural Gas Balance program, which is the first in the nation to include both carbon offsets and RNG. Our RNG sold through this program will support participation by approximately 7,000 natural gas residential customers to reduce their carbon footprint associated with natural gas consumption.01/20/2022 02:27:05
