Extreme heat is a pressing public health risk, particularly for low-income and elderly communities living in developed areas with limited options for relief from heat. It also disproportionately impacts low income households who may live in substandard housing and may not be able to afford air conditioning. According to Union of Concerned Scientists, Palm Beach County historically had four days per year with a heat index above 105 degrees F. On the current emissions pathway, this is projected to increase to 72 days by midcentury and 126 days by late century. A screening-level extreme heat vulnerability assessment was performed by examining land cover, sensitive populations, tree canopy cover, and socioeconomic stress. All of the CCVA study area was considered as being exposed to the potential for extreme heat. A ruleset-based approach was then developed for considering aspects of potential impact (focused on sensitive populations and developed land cover) and adaptive capacity which considers tree canopy coverage and socioeconomic vulnerability (based on the CDC’s socioeconomic status theme, one component of their overall social vulnerability index). The most vulnerable census tracts were identified as 1) highly developed areas with higher percentages of sensitive residents (older than 65 or under 18), 2) those with relatively low tree canopy coverage and high socioeconomic stress. The City of Boynton Beach includes 10 census tracts with high vulnerability to extreme heat.01/19/2022 02:30:06
