During the later stages of COVID-19, Tempe received numerous federal grants which significantly lessened the financial impacts of the pandemic and allowed the hiring of new employees in departments related to climate action. Tempe has created numerous COVID-19 recovery initiatives that increase the resilience of the community, and can be used in the future to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Domestic Violence, Physical Health and Mental Wellness Initiative allocated funds for a variety of COVID recovery and resilience measures related to healthcare and housing services. Counseling, youth and elderly services, safety supplies, PPE equipment, and family/emergency housing have all been included in the plan, and could be used to help mitigate future problems caused by climate change. Tempe has allocated funds for increased housing and shelter services for the homeless, which will be extremely important to have in place when extreme weather events occur. The pandemic has also caused the city to increase its capacity to help people find jobs and start small businesses. Virtual job fairs and small business grants have been provided, both of which can be used in the future to promote sustainable careers and businesses. Tempe received $4 million in federal COVID relief funding. The city has been able to use this funding to fund numerous sustainability projects, including an update to the Climate Action Plan. The city has also applied for new grants that provide funding for sustainable projects in the wake of COVID-19.01/14/2022 02:32:38
