San Jose Clean Energy brought on a temporary staff member, with a working title of Energy Resilience Coordinator, to work with Public Works and other City Departments to evaluate backup power generation needs at critical City facilities and develop an RFP/RFI to solicit technologies that can provide clean reliable backup generation with on-site distributed energy resources, as well as leading efforts to install microgrids where feasible. Once the RFP/RFI is complete and this work is further defined, recommendations for specific technologies and projects, and any additional funding, will be brought to City Council for consideration.Department of Public Works (DPW) staff are also evaluating new construction for battery backup-ready systems to support the City’s resiliency goals. DPW staff have engaged with a consultant to aid the City in exploring microgrid locations and possibilities at City facilities. The consultant is looking at facilities without backup generators or sufficient generation for critical loads, in particular, and aiding in prioritization activities. We currently have no project costs or funding sources to report.
