These maps were constructed through 5-year observation data collected from the CoT data logs (Figure 32) were supplemented with 17 years of satellite observation data. The combined results depict the annual fire hazard present within Tshwane. The areas in yellow, orange, and red show areas where there is a moderate to very high risk of annual occurrences of fires (frequent fires observed and responded to).Most regions within the City will be subjected to a moderate to very high risk of annual fires but the settlements and infrastructure within Region 1 (Mabopane), Region 2 (Soshanguve and Wallmannsthal small holdings), Region 3 (Atteridgeville), Region 4 (Mooiplaas, Lyttleton and the western small holdings), Region 6 (Mamelodi, Nellmapius and Eersterust) and Region 7 (Ekangala) will be at risk of frequent annual fires. These dark red areas mostly coincide with the location of informal settlements (regions 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6) and are the result of mostly grass (veld) and rubbish (illegal dumping) fires.When projecting the future fire risk for Tshwane, the following three elements were quantified:•The current observed fire risk as shown in the CoT observed fire hazard •The projected shifts in the fire severity index •The future population growth in areas that are likely to be informal and thus unregulated The result of the possible 2050 fire pressure areas (utilising the above factors) are presented in a map which shows the persistent and increased risk of fires within Tshwane.There is a noticeable increase in the fire danger towards the north, north-west of the City that is consistent with these areas becoming significantly hotter and dryer towards 2050. Region 1 and Region 2 will be impacted significantly by this increased fire danger. This growing fire danger should be particularly well managed next to informal settlements and illegal dumpsites. Region 6 in the areas of Mamelodi, Region 3 in the areas of Atteridgeville and Lotus Gardens and Region 4 in areas such as Olievenhoutbosch also shows a growing fire danger due to the rapid unplanned informal growth associated with these areas.01/20/2022 02:27:05

This dataset contains all public responses to the CDP-ICLEI 2021 Cities questionnaire. All data included in the dataset is self reported by cities. The reporting platform remains open and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions.
Please note that this dataset exceeds the capacity for Excel. To export the data to Excel, the dataset has been separated into three files. Please follow the links below to access these:
