Congreso del Estado de Jalisco, mismo que se reformó el 10 de agosto de 2015, con la expedición del Decreto No. 25400. En éste, se aprueba la declaratoria del Área Metropolitana de Guadalajara, integrada por los municipios de Guadalajara, Zapopan, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, El Salto, Juanacatlán, Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos y Zapotlanejo.El AMG se encuentra ubicada en el occidente de México y forma parte de la Región Centro del estado de Jalisco. Tiene sus límites al norte, con los municipios de San Cristóbal de la Barranca, Ixtlahuacán del Río y Cuquío; al oriente, con Acatic, Tepatitlán de Morelos, Tototlán y Zapotlán del Rey; al sur, con Poncitlán, Chapala, Jocotepec y Acatlán de Juárez; y al poniente, con Tala, El Arenal, Amatitán y Tequila.El Área Metropolitana de Guadalajara es el segundo núcleo urbano más poblado de México, con alrededor de 5.243.392 millones de habitantes (2020, INEGI), y concentra aproximadamente el 61% de la población del estado de Jalisco. EL AMG tiene una densidad promedio de 14 habitantes por hectárea; Guadalajara es el municipio de mayor densidad poblacional con 106 habitantes por hectárea de superficie urbana (hab./ha), seguido por Tonalá y San Pedro Tlaquepaque, ambos, con 70 hab./ha, cuya densidad es relativamente alta debido a que el área urbana concentra la mayor cantidad de población.
