The hope is that an increase in the number of buses and route stop frequency will encourage greater ridership, thus alleviating congestion and the time vehicles spend idling.Public transit systems play a vital role in ensuring that a sustainable environment exists in our City. Provided by the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation, IndyGo’s public transportation system offers 29 fixed bus routes with close to 4,500 stops around the City. IndyGo offers convenient routes, such as the Green Line Downtown/Airport Express, which delivers non-stop service from the Indianapolis International Airport to Downtown Indianapolis daily from 5 AM – 9 PM. IndyGo also operates the Commuter Express, with service from Fishers and Carmel to Downtown daily.IndyGo provides more than 8.5 million rides a year, with each ride saving our City valuable natural resources. IndyGo has dozens of electric buses, and has plans to shift the rest to electric over the coming years. On average, a rider consumes one half the oil or gas he/she would consume if riding in an automobile. Along with gas savings, public transportation reduces the amount of air pollution that enter the air from vehicle emissions. IndyGo provides Indianapolis citizens with transportation options that offer productive drive time and reduced stress from driving in congested traffic, while resulting in a cleaner environment. In September of 2019, IndyGo's Red Line Bus-Rapid transit opened, adding a fleet of all electric buses running along a 13-mile north to south corridor. This line lies within a quarter of a mile to 50,000 households and 150,000 jobs. IndyGo is currently exploring an expansion of this program to include a purple and blue line.Indianapolis also has the Indiana Pacers Bike Share which has 50 docking stations throughout the city, most of which are focused around the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
