A dependência – ou trade-offs - entre os fluxos na produção e consumo de alimentos, água e energia em cidades podem gerar trajetórias de urbanização insustentáveis que contribuem para problemas socioeconômicos, incluindo ineficiência, pobreza, conflitos e doenças. Entretanto, os nexos de alimento, água e energia em cidades são pouco conhecidos. Por outro lado, o uso de infraestrutura verde a azul – como parques, arborização, lagos, rios e reservatórios - surge como uma solução viável para os diversos problemas urbanos, a custo baixo e com resultados mais sustentáveis. Ademais, a melhoria da governança em nível local dessas interações pode proporcionar benefícios significativos para enfrentar alguns dos problemas globais mais complexos, incluindo mudanças climáticas e perda de biodiversidade, bem como ajudar a alcançar outros objetivos de desenvolvimento humano, como segurança alimentar e saúde. Nesse contexto, o projeto IFWEN busca contribuir para o conhecimento sobre a governança urbana nos diferentes níveis relacionados aos nexos entre alimento, água e energia, utilizando infraestrutura verde e azul, a partir da cooperação entre cientistas e agentes de governos. As equipes do irão desenvolver uma metodologia através da prática, incluindo um arcabouço analítico e ferramentas para avaliar as mudanças nos nexos, bem como a construção de capacidades nas cidades para desenvolver soluções inovadoras e gerenciar em nível urbano. Esse arcabouço será baseado em pesquisa empírica e as ferramentas desenvolvidas pelos parceiros serão testadas em oito cidades selecionadas de diferentes regiões do mundo.
