50159537City of Denton, TXDenton, TXUSANorth AmericaPublic2017Energy efficiency/ retrofit measuresBuildingsIn 2014, the City adopted a Green Building policy that calls for the inclusion of sustainable design and building practices in all new construction projects, pointing towards LEED as a model for rating these standards. Additionally, it recognized that energy efficiency and water conservation are important operational factors that need to be considered in both new construction and retrofit projects. The City requires feasibility studies on new construction projects to determine LEED Certification viability. These actions have led to the development of two LEED Certified facilities and three more with certifications in progress.(33.214841°, -97.133068°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)

Policies that are intended to lead towards achieving that goal are as follows; optimizing the fleet size; purchasing new vehicles that provide the best available net reduction in emissions; educating and encouraging staff in eco-driving best practices; and utilizing sustainable fuels as they become economically available.(33.214841°, -97.133068°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)

Further emission reductions have been achieved through reducing coal purchase by 44% between 2011 and 2015. With the adoption of the Renewable Denton Plan in 2015, we have set the next target to 70% renewables by 2019, followed by 100% in 2030.(33.214841°, -97.133068°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)
50559537City of Denton, TXDenton, TXUSANorth AmericaPublic2017Recycling or composting collections and/or facilitiesWasteIn 2008, the Solid Waste department partnered with DTE Biomass Energy to install a landfill gas collection system. The system covers the entire 63-acres of current landfill space, capturing gas, which is directed to an onsite DTE 1.6 megawatt electric power generator. The energy is then transferred onto the Denton Municipal Utilities electric grid where it is used to power approximately 1,600 Denton homes.(33.214841°, -97.133068°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)

In 2015, it was awarded ‘Plant of the Year’ in its category by the Water Environment Association of Texas (WEAT). Included in this award was acknowledgment for the high operating efficiency of the plant, keeping pollutant loading to a minimum, and participation in our inter-departmental beneficial reuse program. Strictly from an energy consumption standpoint, the plant ranks among the most efficient facilities in its class (i.e. kWh/MG). In 2016, P.S. Arora, the General Manager of Wastewater, was also recognized by WEAT with the Sidney L. Allison Award for his significant contributions to the engineering, science, and operation of wastewater collection stations.(33.214841°, -97.133068°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)

This project will save on the city's energy consumption for lighting for this street by over 50%.(40.6884°, -75.2207°)(37.09024°, -95.712891°)
52943912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017Building codes and standardsBuildings140000New construction through to 2020 is estimated to add greenhouse gas emissions to the building emissions inventory. By building to higher energy efficiency standards than normal it is estimated that 140,000 TCO2e of potentially added emissions will be averted over the 50 year life of the buildings. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)

Energy retrofit improvements carried forward for 40 years are expected to generate this cummulative emissions reduction. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)
53143912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017Energy efficiency/ retrofit measuresBuildings265000If the estimated retrofits take place, and the benefits are carried over the life of 40 years, it is estimated that the cummulative reduction will amount to 265,000 TCO2e. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)
53243912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017Green space and/ or biodiversity preservation and expansionCommunity-Scale Development240000The city has an ongoing program with a target to double the tree canopy of the boulevard trees over which it has control. This will generate a perpetual carbon sink value. For the purpose of this report this added sink value of roughly 3000 TCO2e per year is carried for 80 years. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)
53343912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017Improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 from motorized vehiclesPrivate Transport80000The municipal fleet has a long term Sustainable Fleet Management plan that proposes fuel efficiency training programs, right sizing vehicles, the use of hybrids, and using biofuels. It is estimated that a reduction in fleet emissions of roughly 4,000 TCO2e/year will be realized by the end of the program implementation This would be maintained into perpetuity, but a 20 year program life is estimated here for this report.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)
53443912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017LED / CFL / other luminaire technologiesOutdoor Lighting184000This is a calculated value for lifetime TCO2e displacement of 20 years. LEDs are being used to replace the existing high pressure sodium vapour lights that are presently lighting the roadways in our city. We have replaced roughly 10% of the lamp stock in the city as of 2013. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)
53543912City of EdmontonEdmontonCanadaNorth AmericaPublic2017Low or zero carbon energy supply generationEnergy Supply417000The city purchases Renewable Energy Certificates each year to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the inventory for Local Government. The amount of the purchase is determined by calculating the difference between the target emissions reduction trendline each year and the forecast inventory emissions for the year. This is the cummulative sum of the purchases from 2013 through to and including 2020. This forecast reduction is being revised in preparation for the new greenhouse gas emissions management plan which should be released in 2018.(53.544389°, -113.4909267°)(56.130366°, -106.346771°)

Description

Cities are leading the transition to a sustainable economy. In 2017 over 350 cities told CDP that they are working to reduce emissions in their own city operations. Cities are leading my example and changing the way that they operate.
