956201973198South AustraliaAustralia5. StrategyClimate actions5.8iPlease provide details of your climate actions in the Waste sector.3Action description1Adopt source separation policies (e.g. collection for dry recyclables, organic compostable waste, etc.)South Australia's metropolitan local councils have three-bin kerbside collection systems (organics, recycling and residual waste), and some have implemented food waste systems for municipal waste. Many regional centres have also adopted high performing kerbside diversion systems. South Australia was the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce container deposit legislation. The Kerbside Performance Plus (Food Organics) Incentives Program encourages councils to implement systems which assist with the diversion of food waste from landfill. Councils receive a subsidy for the cost of bench-top containers, compostable bags and production of householder education material. Provides support to councils to implement sustainable and efficient food organics recycling systems. In doing so, the financial incentives aim to meet targets in South Australia’s Waste Strategy 2015-2020. It recognises that disposing food to landfill represents the loss of a potentially valuable resource and that when food organics are blended with kerbside green organic material, it improves the quality and nutrient value of the processed compost.2020-05-01T04:17:07.533
