102635201872932Western CapeSouth Africa7. WaterWater supply risks7.1aPlease identify the risks to your region’s water supply as well as the timescale and level of risk.4Risk description1Currently close to 100% of the available water in the Western Cape Water Supply System is already allocated. We are currently experiencing decreased rainfall during the winter period which have resulted in the region experiencing a three year drought (2015-2018) and nationally being declared a disaster area (Western Cape State of the Environment Report (SOER), 2017/18). Water demand in the Western Cape currently exceeds water supply mainly from agriculture and urban areas (SOER, 2017/18). Winter is our rainfall period and we have had a number of years of below average rainfall. The drought has already impacted the agriculture sector which is a main economic activity in the region. Water is being transferred across basins to ensure that the most vulnerable towns do not run out of water and various augmentation including borehole drilling and desalination have been initiated.2020-05-01T04:17:03.750
