StrategyClimate action on short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs)5.12bWhich sectors are covered in your region-wide plans to reduce SLCPs?2Types of action to reduce SLCPs relevant to the sector1Oil and gas sites must conduct and submit an economic assessment to demonstrate routine gas flaring is the only economically effective option for stranded natural gas (solution gas). This reduces wasteful flaring which has co-benefit of reducing black carbon and methane emissions.

StrategyClimate action on short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs)5.12dPlease comment on the plan, detailing any progress towards achieving the plan's objectives and its level of integration within your broader region-wide mitigation policies and/or climate action strategy.0Carbon Competitiveness Incentive Regulation applies to facilities that emit over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. A facility with less than 100,000 tonnes of GHGs may be eligible to opt-in to the CCIR if it competes against a facility regulated under the CCIR or has more than 50,000 tonnes of annual emissions, high emissions-intensity and trade-exposure. By opting in, facilities become exempt from the application of the carbon levy for fuels whose emissions are included in their site reporting. Facility owners may also be eligible to receive economic relief under the Compliance Cost Containment Program. Facilities that emit 10,000 tonnes or more of specified gases must submit annual reports on their emissions.

Has a decarbonisation pathway(s) been modelled for your target: Preliminary analysis established by the Climate Leadership Plan. Short target summary: Reduce methane emissions from oil and gas sector by 45 percent by 2025. Please detail and comment on any progress to reach target Methane emissions from oil and gas sector will be reduced by 45% by improving measurement and reporting of methane emissions, leak detection and repair requirements, applying new emissions design standards to new facilities, programs and requirements for existing facilities. On-site combustion in conventional oil and gas will be levied starting January 1, 2023 while that sector works to reduce methane under the government's new joint initiative on methane reduction and verification.
