Risks and adaptationAssessment and planning6.4Do you work with local governments in the development and/or implementation of your regional adaptation strategies? Please explain how.2Explanation1Working with local governments on climate adaptationAlberta is working with the cities of Edmonton and Calgary on incorporating climate change considerations into the City Charters. The regulation require mitigation and adaptation plans to be developed by each city. As well, Alberta has provided funding for adaptation planning in smaller municipalities, through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre. Also, local authorities are prompted to consider the effects of climate change in their submissions for funding for relevant programs.

Risks and adaptationAssessment and planning6.5Are you involved in the development and/or implementation of your government’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP)? Please explain how.2Explanation1Working on the National Adaptation Plan (NAP)Alberta has endorsed the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, which includes actions to advance adaptation and build resilience to climate impacts across the country. Along with federal and other provincial and territorial governments, we are co-exploring implementation options of the Framework commitments, including translating scientific information and Traditional Knowledge into action, building climate resilience through infrastructure, protecting and improving human health and well-being, supporting particularly vulnerable regions, and reducing climate-related hazards and disaster risks. Alberta also works with the federal government to advance provincial and national adaptation goals, through participation on Canada’s Climate Change Adaptation Platform. The Platform is a forum through which experts and decision-makers share resources and collaborate on adaptation priorities.

Risks and adaptationClimate risks and adaptation actions6.6aPlease describe these current and/or anticipated impacts of climate change.4Impact description1Per degree of additional global mean temperature increase, a 30% increase in the number of very wet days (more than 25 mm in 24 hours), as well as in the amount of precipitation on the wettest day of the year, is projected for Alberta (Alberta's Climate Future, 2018). In Alberta, a significant amount of precipitation can lead to severe flooding, risk to human life, damage to buildings and infrastructure, loss of crops and livestock, and disruption to transportation and communications.
