FEMAS Responsible Soya
","ABF's support for the RTRS has been evident with sponsorship at RT7 which included providing delegates with a visit to one of our animal feed mills during the RT7 meeting in the UK in 2013.
In addition to being an active member of the RTRS for a number of years, AB Agri is heavily involved in the activity of the UK (AIC) and European (FEFAC) compound feed associations to achieve a mass market solution for responsible sourcing of soya. A common solution across Europe would be the most effective approach and hence AIC is supporting FEFAC rather than taking independent action. In May 2013, around 43% of UK used soya bean meal was covered by some type of responsible sourcing scheme.
FEFAC members are working towards responsible soy with the main objective to facilitate mainstream market supply of responsibly produced soybean products to Europe.
The FEFAC Roadmap towards responsible soy includes:
- supporting value chain initiatives to increase the responsible supply of feed ingredients to improve the sustainability of feed and livestock products.
- the FEFAC has joined the global Round Table on responsible soy in 2006 which developed the responsible soy “Principles and Criteria” in a multi-stakeholder process.
Key issues identified by FEFAC members include:
- Responsible working conditions (no child labour, forced labour, discrimination and harassment).
- No purchase from illegally deforested land, incl. land cleared of native habitat, except in compliance with national legislation and mutual agreements resulting from a continuous multi-stakeholder process.
- Good agricultural practices with key emphasis on agrochemicals application an legislation (respect of Stockholm and Rotterdam convention).
- Respect for Legal use of land / land rights.
- Protection of Community relations.

- Audit processes to evaluate public commitments to responsible cattle purchases in the Amazon biome.
","JBS has identified and developed projects that aim to minimize environmental impacts and thus offer more sustainable products to its customers and consumers.
Examples of these projects are cases awarded, as the ""Best of Sustainable Supply 2014 - Mc Donald's"" and the ""End to End - Walmart""
JBS was the big winner in two categories of “Best of Sustainable Supply 2014”, a global award from the McDonald's chain for suppliers who apply standout sustainability solutions as part of their production processes. The company won the ""Climate Change and Energy"" and ""Water"" categories, presenting cases that had generated major production process efficiency gains in Brazil, helping to further increase sustainability of the company's products.
The first case was based on bovine rumen content, a type of waste which is generated by cattle processing units, using it to produce energy from industrial boilers.
JBS was recognized by Walmart in the Sustainability from End to End program for the implementation of sustainable practices in the production of Friboi Burger. The program aims to mitigate environmental impacts during the production process, in addition to promote social and educational projects and encourage continuous improvement of its suppliers. Relevant initiatives are done such as: using bovine rumen content, a type of waste which is generated by cattle processing units, to produce energy from industrial boilers. Besides, the product`s package it is from an ecological managed forest and it is recyclable.
Besides these two projects, JBS and Brazil's two largest companies in the Brazilian beef industry will be improving the annual audit processes used to evaluate their public commitments to responsible cattle purchases in the Amazon biome. Companies will be following a unified Term of Reference (ToR) which sets out the rules and criteria for independent audits. This initiative is a way of increasing transparency and further refining this commitment to sustainability in the Brazilian beef value chain.
Another initiative was an audit of JBS`purchase process conducted between February 28 and March 17 2014. The audit concluded that JBS has complied with the terms of all its agreements and did not identify any evidence to suggest otherwise, guaranteeing that the raw material used in its production processes is sourced sustainably.

CHEP trade associations and memberships (list attached below)

CHEP USA also partners with the National Forest Foundation (NFF). The NFF supports projects that replant Longleaf Pine.","CHEP's lumber sourcing policy includes supplier obligations and qualification. In addition, the Group continues to work with strategic suppliers to further increase the available supply of COC certified lumber. Brambles 2013 Sustainability Review also sets out examples where businesses are working with its supply chain to address sustainable lumber sourcing (see pp 12-14). For example, CHEP USA engages with suppliers and advocates and encourages further development of COC certified supply. CHEP USA is also working with its suppliers and continuing current supply chain management practices to better understand and minimise the potential use of Longleaf Pine, Virginia Pine and Sand Pine (classified as vulnerable or near threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species).

Over time, and where practical, the Group targets converting sources identified as certified source lumber to COC certified lumber. Definitions are:

Lumber from certified source: where the supplier of the lumber has COC certification; however, the supplier has not referenced this certification or provided complete accreditation details for the lumber supplied to CHEP, or where CHEP has undertaken due diligence to provide confidence that the source forests or mill is certified by PEFC or FSC (or equivalent).

COC certified lumber: where CHEP can verify supplier claims through documentation that lumber purchased has an associated COC certification credit.

Policy compliant lumber source: where the purchased lumber does not carry COC certification and is not from a certified source, but where CHEP has undertaken due diligence to establish that the lumber flow has not been contaminated by controversial source lumber (only 12% of lumber in FY13 was not certified).",3-5 Years,,,"To measure progress against the target and better identify opportunities in the supply chain, purchased lumber is categorised in three distinct groups.

1. COC certified lumber. Where CHEP can verify supplier claims, though documentation, that lumber purchased has an associated COC certification credit.
2. Lumber from certified sources. Lumber classified as being from a certified source is required to meet one of the following criteria:
a. Certified sources, where the supplier of the lumber has COC certification; however, the supplier has not referenced this certification or provided complete COC accreditation details for the lumber supplied to CHEP; or
b. Other certified sources, where CHEP has undertaken due diligence that seeks to provide confidence that the source forest or mill is certified by PEFC, FSC or equivalent (equivalence is based on the Montreal sustainability criteria that underpins PEFC and FSC).

Further, in FY13 KPMG conducted limited assurance for Brambles 2013 Sustainability Review, including lumber sourcing data and commentary. The statement of limited assurance is attached.

CHEP Europe continues to maintain its COC certification status and reported that 98% of lumber purchased in FY13 was COC certified. CHEP Australia expects its work on transitioning its hardwood lumber supply base to COC certified lumber to be completed in FY14. The New Zealand lumber supply base will be COC certified by FY15."

Additionally, it actively participates as a member of Leather Working Group and on its Executive Committee. This multi-stakeholder organization aims to spread sustainability and environmental practices throughout the leather industry.

JBS work through ABIEC - Brazilian Beef Exporters Association, the sector of grains (ABIOVE) in the IBAMA Working Group (Brazilian Institute of the Environment) to improve the public list of illegal deforestation and embargoed areas. Moreover, the company is often involved, seminars and meetings and gave speeches about its System for Social and Environmental Monitoring of Cattle Suppliers in the following events:
- Anuga Fair in Germany;
- Regional Meeting on the Amazon, held by the Attorney of  Pará state;
-Discussion Forums TEEB for the Brazilian Business Sector;

In 2013, JBS joined the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program and published its GHG Emissions Inventory in the Emissions Public Registry Platform. The company also participates in other initiatives for reporting GHG emissions data and information on climate change management strategy, such as the CDP - Driving Sustainable Economies - module on Climate Change, and the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) of BM&FBOVESPA. The system aims to check if the suppliers are not involved with deforestation, protected areas invasion and slave labor, which are the main standards outlined by the company´s commitments.
In order to bring credibility to this process, and ensure compliance with the company’s commitments on sustainability, JBS contracts an annual third party audit to review the procedures and purchases data with regards to the social and environmental criteria and operation restrictions.
With the fulfillment of the criteria, JBS ensures that its entire value chain, including all products and by-products derived from cattle operations, is sustainable.
The verification occurs in a reasonable basis, enabling that the auditors obtain sufficient and appropriate evidence showing if the company has met the set social and environmental criteria.
To provide more accountability and transparency, the year based 2013 audit report was also released to the company´s stakeholders.
The audit concluded that JBS has complied with the terms of all its agreements and did not identify any evidence to suggest otherwise.

As a member of The Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), Cargill is working with other key global organizations to implement criteria for a responsible and sustainable approach to soy production globally.

Through its membership of ABIOVE (Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries) Cargill is supporting the Soja Plus Program, which aims to introduce an independently audited, certification scheme for soybean producers in Brazil.

In partnership with TNC, Cargill is providing support to farmers in the Santarém region to comply with the Brazilian Forest Code. Since 2004, this Sustainable Soy Partnership has helped farmers apply best management practices in environmental stewardship and provide training in reforestation and restoration techniques.

In August 2011, Cargill announced a $3 million grant to enable TNC to expand and build on the success of this program. The program is being expanded to pilot and test monitoring systems for environmental impacts beyond deforestation, such as pesticide use and water quality. It will also extend the initiative to reach farmers in up to 20 additional municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso.

In Argentina, Cargill has trained 400 soy farmers in best practices regarding environmental protection, fertilizer and pest management, and safety. The farmers received a sustainability kit as part of the training, including supplies and information to improve worker safety. These farmers are some of the 1,100 farmers from Argentina and Paraguay who have signed declarations confirming they are respecting conservation areas and that their harvest – representing 690,000 metric tons of soy last year – is from lands that were productive before January 1, 2008.
","In 2013 Cargill brought together approximately 60 thought leaders from Europe, Brazil and the United States to participate in a “learning journey” focused on addressing challenges in sustainable soy production and identifying clear, implementable solutions. This four-day session in Brazil involved food and feed companies, retailers, producers, governments, NGOs and academics.

Cargill’s $3 million commitment to TNC will also enable the launch of a new effort to promote cocoa production in the communities of Tucumã and São Félix do Xingu in Pará state. Cocoa production is native to the Amazon biome and it offers an opportunity to restore deforested lands, while presenting small-scale farmers with an economically viable alternative to land speculation and cattle ranching.

We want to help address this urgent issue. We do this through Sky Rainforest Rescue, our partnership with WWF to help save a billion trees in the Amazon rainforest.

Established in 2009, our campaign with WWF is working with communities and government in Acre, north-west Brazil where we’re aiming to help save around 3 million hectares of forest from deforestation – an area roughly the size of Belgium.
Working with WWF-Brazil, we’re helping the community in Acre to identify new market opportunities for sustainable forest products like rubber, and enable local producers to get a fair price for their goods. We’re also engaging with governments and international bodies to address the causes of deforestation.

This year, we reached our campaign fundraising target of £4 million, which Sky has matched to reach a total of over £8 million to support the project.

As we’re in 11.2 million homes across Britain and Ireland we also have a unique opportunity to bring the issue of climate change to life through dedicated TV programming, such as Flintoff’s Road to Nowhere, which followed self-confessed environmental sceptic Freddie Flintoff and extreme cyclist and environmentalist Robb Penn as they cycled Brazil’s Trans-Amazonian Highway.

We reach beyond our own platforms too creating interactive learning experiences, such as a new area in the Eden Project’s rainforest biome which tells the journey of rubber tapped from the tree to the sole of your shoe.

Sky and WWF are also working together to enable children to explore the wonders of the rainforest. I Love Amazon Schools is a free week of fun, rainforest-themed activities – all linked to the curriculum - for primary school pupils aged 5-11. 52,911 schools participated in 2013/14.
We hope that Sky Rainforest Rescue will become a model for tackling deforestation in other areas of the Amazon, as well as other rainforests around the world. According to new figures released by the Brazilian Environment Ministry, deforestation in Brazil rose by 28% overall in the last year with Acre, the home of Sky Rainforest Rescue, being one of only three states that recorded a drop.

Only looking at the category responsible fiber sourcing, the result was 92%. In addition, SCA engages with forest stakeholders by participating in the World Business Council on Sustainable Development's (WBCSD) Forest Solutions Group. As part of this engagement, SCA has participated in preparing solutions, “Big ideas”, and emphasized the forest’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and how the use of products from sustainable forestry has a positive impact on the environment. One solution, “Big idea”, developed by SCA is chosen to be included in Action 2020, a plan presented by WBCSD with the aim to develop solutions so that the world’s population can live well within the planet’s resources and limits.

SCA’s idea is based on the application and distribution of forestry according to a Swedish model based on regeneration. The Swedish model has resulted in an almost twofold increase in the forest standing volume compared with 90 years ago, despite the fact that the yield from the forest during the same period has doubled. One cause of deforestation is poverty and the creation of agricultural areas. Sustainable forest management practices involving replanting would instead increase absorption and bind carbon dioxide in growing forest. Growing trees need 1.3 tons of carbon dioxide to produce one cubic meter of wood. SCA’s forests have an annual net growth of 1%, which means that they absorb 2.6 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. If forest management practices according to the Swedish model were introduced in half of the world’s forests at the same time as deforestation was halted and damage to forests halved, all of the world’s carbon emissions would be absorbed by the oceans, growing forests and other vegetation.",100% Achieved,,,
