Housing 50% of the world’s population, cities are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. In 2017, some 370 cities disclosed their adaptation actions through CDP. Explore how these cities are building resilience to environmental impacts.

CDP’s new infographic report ‘Who’s tackling urban water challenges’, produced in partnership with AECOM, the global infrastructure firm, and funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, shows the first and most comprehensive dataset of global water action by cities and companies produced to date. Using information gathered from 569 cities and 1,432 companies, each reporting their water management activity, it illustrates how global cities and companies are responding to the escalating challenge of climate change and urban population growth.

The cities most concerned about their water supply lie in Asia and Oceania (84%); with serious risks also identified in Africa (80%) and Latin America (75%). 63% of North American cities deem climate change a risk to water supply, with fewer cities concerned in Europe (34%). 196 cities reported risks of water stress and scarcity; 132 a risk of declining water quality and 103 a risk of flooding.

State and regional government climate data is fundamental to delivering the Paris Agreement. Using the data that states and regions disclosed to CDP, we estimate that those that disclosed both a region-wide GHG emissions reduction target and a GHG inventory, are on course to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement by 2020.
We incorporated the 2017 International Energy Agency scenarios to explore how collective emissions of states and regions change over time. This shows that disclosing states and regions are on average setting more ambitious targets than those set by their national counterparts. This demonstrates that present 2020 targets are sufficient to put states and regions on a trajectory for a 2 degree Celsius world. However, their long-term targets while more ambitious than their national counterparts, are not sufficient to keep the world below a 2 degree rise after 2020.
