This helps to implement new and radical sustainable transport solutions. Therefore the City of Heidelberg committed to the C40 Fossil Fuel Free Streets Declaration in 2018, and started with the implementation of electric and hydrogen based transport systems. Furthermore, the City of Heidelberg aims to increase the share of biking and walking, which are already well accepted forms of mobility across all social groups in Heidelberg. In 2019 the development of a new traffic development plan started as a participation process throughout the city. The existing traffic developemnt plan from 1994 with its updates has been updated again in May 2020 including new aspects like E-Mobility, car-free-city-planning, mobility in smart cities. It is orientated at the SDG of the United Nations. (See 1.0a)

The 2019 "Climate protection action plan" even damands: "a participatory instrument that gives voice to future generations".
