Also through the fabrication of fuel-efficient cook stove that will boost environmental and economic benefits. This project is largely funded by GEF and UNDP

Governance | 2.7 | List any emission reduction, adaptation, water related or resilience projects that you have planned within your region for which you hope to attract financing, and provide details on the estimated costs and status of the project. If your region does not have any relevant projects, please select “No relevant projects” under Project Area. | 4 | Project description | 2 | The unsustainable harvesting of forest trees for fuelwood is one of the major drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, reducing the ecological capacity of such forest in providing valuable ecosystem goods and services. The SFM project seeks to promote the sustainable production and utilization of fuelwood. However, the increasing ‘hunger for land’ for diverse economic purposes calls for a broadened project implementation strategy which enhances the generation of multiple environmental and social-economic benefits in addition to fuelwood supply and utilization. Thus the establishment of fast growing trees in vastly degraded forest reserves in CRS via an agroforestry system has potentials to yield the following envisaged beneficial. Firstly, Sustainable supply of fuelwood, timber, food, medicine, tree seedlings and other non-timber forest products. Secondly, restoration of the capacity of degraded lands to provide ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation, erosion control, carbon sequestration, watershed protection and soil enrichment through the cultivation of soil nutrient fixing trees like Afzelia spp and Brychistgia spp along with the fast growing exotic Tectonia grandis and Gmelina arborea. Thirdly, regeneration of arid regions enhances the capacity of these regions to push back on desert encroachment. Fourthly, the envisaged transfer of ownership of plantations to individuals and/or group of individuals will enhance sustainability and greatly reduce fire outbreaks especially in the northern arid regions where forest fire is a common feature. Thus far over 50 hectares of agroforestry plantation has been raised in less than three years. Plantation are established in nine locations across the state to make room for equitable spread and inclusiveness among communities in CRS. Other indigenous trees raised include Khaya spp (Africa mahogany) and Pterocarpus spp (red camwood) to increase the timber value of the plantation while cultivated food crops include groundnuts, cassava, melon and fruit trees such as oranges and mango. In summary, the SFM project presents an innovative frontier for bridging the agriculture-energy and sustainable forest management gap, boosting human wellbeing through climate change mitigation, eco-friendly food production and energy generation especially the livelihoods of forest dependent communities.
