The plan is currently operational. The project is funded entirely by Local Government. The total cost of the project is not fixed as the work is on-going.

Adaptation3.0Please describe the main actions you are taking to reduce the risk to, and vulnerability of, your city’s infrastructure, services, citizens, and businesses from climate change as identified in the Climate Hazards section.8Action description and implementation progress2Emergency Planning team issue heatwave warnings on the Council's website with steps that can be taken to ensure that personal and the heath and wellbeing of others can be protected during such events. The current Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-2025 also recognises the risk that heatwaves pose to older and more vulnerable people within County Durham's population. The cost for this work was staff time only.

Adaptation3.0Please describe the main actions you are taking to reduce the risk to, and vulnerability of, your city’s infrastructure, services, citizens, and businesses from climate change as identified in the Climate Hazards section.8Action description and implementation progress3An £80,000 scheme to reduce the impact of flooding on one of only two roads into a County Durham village has been completed. During periods of heavy rainfall, the road linking Shadforth to the neighbouring village of Ludworth is frequently submerged in floodwater, making it difficult for residents and their visitors to enter and leave. To address this, we have carried out significant drainage improvements and introduced a new flood defence scheme. The work has included opening up a 60-meter culverted watercourse beneath the highway verge and creating a large basin capable of containing more than 500,000 litres of floodwater during extreme rainfall. This required moving 900 tonnes of earth. The area was then landscaped, and new planting introduced to create an attractive focal point for people entering the village from the east. Wetland habitats have also been created to enhance the local ecology.

Adaptation3.0Please describe the main actions you are taking to reduce the risk to, and vulnerability of, your city’s infrastructure, services, citizens, and businesses from climate change as identified in the Climate Hazards section.8Action description and implementation progress4In June 2012, more than 100 homes and businesses at the northern end of the town were affected by flooding and Chester Burn was the main cause. We have completed flood prevention work with Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency at the eastern and western sections of the Burn, but needed to do further work to reduce flood risks in the longer term.We have worked with the Environment Agency to model what effects potential work will have to prevent flooding. The results show that the work we are doing will reduce the risk of flooding from a 'one in 100' year storm.Actions included:- open up a 90m stretch of the Burn to create an open channel running from the road at South Burns down to the Red Carpet area- landscape the opened area to include new footpaths and seating, providing a haven for wildlife and storage for flood water during severe storms- extend the flood wall to the west of the viaduct- relocate the sewer at Cone Terrace to increase channel's capacityThe scheme cost £6.2 million and is funded by Durham County Council, the Environment Agency, and the European Regional Development Fund.

Adaptation3.0Please describe the main actions you are taking to reduce the risk to, and vulnerability of, your city’s infrastructure, services, citizens, and businesses from climate change as identified in the Climate Hazards section.8Action description and implementation progress5The Durham Woodland Creation programme was established in August 2020 following the approval of our Climate Emergency Response Plan in 2019. The programme has ambitious aims to plant 10,000 trees in each of the 14 Area Action Partnerships, establishing new woods across the county and maximising opportunities for community engagement in tree planting. There is also an opportunity to plant 69,000 trees over the next three years, one for every school child in the county, in partnership with County Durham's Outdoor And Sustainability Education Specialists (OASES) who will work with at least 70 schools. The programme will involve younger school age children who will collect and plant local seeds to create small tree nurseries that can be planted out at a later date. Older pupils will also be able to plant trees either in their school grounds or in appropriate locations in their communities across the county. The North Pennines A68 Corridor project is a joint scheme between Durham County Council, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission, which have identified the area to the west of the A68 as having the potential for large scale woodland creation. This is highlighted in the County Durham Landscape Strategy and we are working with private landowners to advise on woodland creation schemes and management plans.Thousands of trees are also set to be planted across the region as part of the proposed North East Community Forest programme. Durham County Council have joined other North East local authorities (Newcastle, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland) to plant tens of thousands of trees each year across the North East, by 2050, to create England's latest community forest. The scheme, which will receive Whitehall funding, is also hoped to reduce the flood risk and create habitat for wildlife, as well as improving physical and mental health. The programme is expected to take five years to complete. When fully planted the North East Community Forest is expected to capture 155,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
