115811826450Durham County CouncilUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandEurope6. Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration1The Business Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP) supports County Durham SMEs who wish to make financial savings through energy efficiency and renewable energy generation. With support from both Durham County Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), BEEP provides a fully funded and independent audit of the SME, its practices and buildings. The audits are designed to identify all areas where financial savings can be made to business by eliminating wasted energy. BEEP also offers a grant to help SMEs with financial support towards the purchase and installation of energy efficient equipment. The grant is available on a first come, first served basis and can only be accessed if a BEEP energy audit has been completed. An example of recent collaboration between businesses is BEEP providing an audit and report to TGC activity centre, which is a based in a small off-grid building, previously using a diesel generator for power. BEEP recommended a standalone solution and it was installed by Teesdale Renewables, a County Durham based renewables business. In the North East the businesses are keen to use local businesses and the majority of businesses supported by BEEP go on and use County Durham contractors. Occasionally, it will be the local branch of a larger national company, like YESSS Electricals in Bowburn, but on the whole, smaller regional businesses are used.Another business, Protocol Engineering Limited in Stanley bought a new energy efficient compressor after BEEP's audit and report, and this was purchased from AG Compressor Air Limited, also in Stanley. Dunhouse Quarry in Cleatham upgraded their lighting to LEDs following BEEP advice and the work was carried out by Warren Electrical Limited in Newton Aycliffe.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration2We are at the initial stages of setting up a Carbon Offsetting scheme for County Durham for local businesses and residents to purchase carbon credits. This requires collaboration between the Council, landowners and carbon accreditation businesses. The purchased credits will be used to fund offsetting actions including tree planting and peatland restoration.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration3The Durham Heat Hub brings together researchers, businesses, and local government with the aim of decarbonising heat in the county and beyond. The hub's mission is to expand research capacity in the area of heat decarbonisation by bringing together researchers, practitioners and policy makers.Durham Heat Hub will contribute to the decarbonisation of heat by creating collaboration between academia, local government, industry and local communities.Durham Heat Hub is a convener and facilitator of multi-disciplinary and multi-sector heat collaborations.Through our annual events, meetings and talks we support the building of project consortia for research and innovation funding proposals, provide information about latest research and best practice project, identify research and innovation gaps and opportunities, and facilitate knowledge exchange.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration4Durham County Council collaborated with OASES to create the ECO2 Smart Schools Programme. OASES stands for Outdoor and Sustainability Education Specialists. They have been successfully delivering and promoting outdoor learning and global sustainability education for over 20 years from their base in County Durham. They seek to engage young people with the natural world, helping them to understand and appreciate the planet that supports them. They also aim to inspire, motivate and engage young people by providing them with exciting educational experiences that will lead them to be enthusiastic, creative, resilient and confident learners.ECO2 Smart Schools provides resources to help schools create practical and engaging learning experiences exploring energy, climate change and the environment throughout the curriculum.Through direct support, with assistance from Durham County Council's energy team, we help schools to make significant savings through practical changes to school buildings and practices (eg LED lighting retrofit; solar panel arrays; building energy management controls etc), and implementation of the education programme.ECO2 Smart Schools creates opportunities for all members of the school community to learn more about the environment and how to make positive changes to safeguard it for the future.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration5Durham County Council has collaborated on a number of European partner projects related to energy and energy efficiency over many years. Currently it is engaging with two Interreg funded programmes; REBUS and SME Power. REBUS (Renovation for Energy Efficient Buildings) is a partnership comprising municipalities and organisations from 8 countries led by the Regional Agency for Waste and Resource Management from Tuscany, Italy. The partners have showcased various good practice successful behaviour change and retrofit projects and developed a collaborative Energy Renovation Pathway resource designed for any public sector organisations developing energy efficiency projects. The programme has recently been extended until Summer 2022 to investigate the impact of Covid on working practices and energy use in public buildings.SME Power looks to learn from European colleagues and integrate their good practice into Durham County Council's projects. We are currently working with partners from Slovenia who have delivered a successful energy efficiency project in their tourism sector and seeing if we can replicate elements of their good practice in our BEEP and business support sectors.

The site, and fleet operating at the site, is responsible for nearly 4% of DCC’s carbon footprint. The project will install a large (3 MW) solar farm with battery storage to provide zero carbon electricity to electrified fleet vehicles and electrified building heating systems (heat pumps) in refurbished buildings. As the fleet transitions to electric vehicles this project will make the depot a truly low carbon and nearly net zero carbon site. There are others, which are published in our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Additional funding was sought from the PSDS to provide low carbon heat and electricity to the building. This will be achieved through an air source heat pump and rooftop solar photovoltaics. This project refers only to the addition of the ASHP and PV, not the full construction of the building.
