12245659572District of Saanich, BCCanadaNorth America8.3aPlease provide details on your city’s energy efficiency targets.9Plans to meet target (include details on types of energy in thermal /electricity)1Saanich has a 300,000 kWh energy efficiency target annually as part of our commitment to the BC Hydro Corporate Energy Management program. In addition, Saanich is actively reducing natural gas use through both energy conservation measures and a move to renewable energy. Actions to achieve these energy efficiency targets are incorporated within the Corporate Strategic Energy Management Plan updated annually. It should be noted that while Saanich is increasing energy efficiency, we are actively electrifying in order to reduce GHG emissions, given our electricity supply is currently 97% renewable. Likewise, in the community, the focus is on setting and achieving targets for GHG reduction. So while energy conservation is a critical component of achieving these targets and supporting affordability and minimizing energy supply infrastructure, it sits alongside electrification and a move to renewable energy and as such, there are no specific community wide energy efficiency targets. An example is the move to heat pumps and energy management systems for EV charging - these give great consideration to energy efficiency but the primary target is related to the GHG reductions associated with the switch from fossil fuel home heating and vehicles.

12246759572District of Saanich, BCCanadaNorth America8.5How many households within the municipal boundary face energy poverty? Please select the threshold used for energy poverty in your city.3Comment1Energy PovertyWe follow the definition used by the Canadian Urban Sustainability Practitioners' Network based on the work of Maryam Rezaei. Home energy cost burdens are measured as the percentage of total after-tax household income spent on home heating and electricity. Most Canadians spend less than 3 per cent of after-tax income on energy for their homes. Households that spend double than the average (or 6%) are considered to be energy burdened.
