The increase may be partially due to better emissions reporting from local utilities than was available in 2017. Several factors have an impact on our change in total emissions. Most significantly, our electric utility (IOU) has consistently replaced coal with cleaner fuels, mostly renewable wind-sourced energy. Additionally, improvements/increases in vehicle fuel efficiency have made a impact in reducing total emissions. Third, The City administers a large building benchmarking program affecting over 1,000 commercial, institutional and residential buildings of at least 50,000 sf.
