12326849330Kansas CityUnited States of AmericaNorth America5. Emissions Reduction5.1Please describe how the target(s) reported above align with the global 1.5 - 2 °C pathway set out in the Paris agreement.0Kansas City aligns with a goal of carbon neutrality set before the 2050 deadline. The City has made several policy decisions since the last CDP report. (1) An analysis of our tree canopy indicates the canopy is aging and may have a difficult time with increasing heat impacts. Accordingly, the City has adopted an Urban Forest Master Plan which call for gradual increase to $15 million per year to plant and maintain trees; Also adopted is an internal administrative regulation governing all departments with regard to tree removal and replacement; Drafting a new tree preservation ordinance that will govern preservation and enhancement of the tree canopy in all private sector development activities. The City has entered into an agreement, called Renewables Direct, with our local electric utility to provide sufficient wind and solar-sourced renewable energy to provide for 100% of municipal operations by 2022. The City has systematically improved the energy efficiency of its facilities with a target of achieving ENERGY STAR certification for 90% of the eligible buildings by 2025. The City administers the Energy Empowerment Program for benchmarking the energy use and efficiency of large buildings throughout the city. The program applies to all commercial, institutional, residential and industrial buildings of at least 50,000 sf. Owners/managers are required to report their energy use by submitting data to the City through Portfolio Manager annually. Further, City Council has, by adopting Resolution #200005 in May 2020 has resolved that for (1) City municipal operations - The City will work to reduce GHG emissions 70% relative to the year 2000 by 2025, and 100% by 2030, along with 100% reduction in emissions related to electricity consumption by 2022. and (2) by adopting Resolution #200005 the City has resolved that Citywide GHG emissions will be reduced 30% relative to the year 2000 by 2025, 50% by 2030 and be climate neutral by 2040, along with 100% reduction in emissions related to electricity consumption by 2030.

Public Works previously installed around 1,500 new LED streetlights as a pilot program in several neighborhoods of KCMO. The project went out for bid and proposals were received. However, due to unidentified funding sources, all bids were rejected. A new RFP is expected later this year. The city has already converted approximately 10,000 lights to LED throughout the city.
