This pilot program was designed by the Transportation Electrification Partnership (of which Santa Monica is a member) to create a scalable model for electrifying light- and medium-duty deliveries in urban areas, and test various zero emission delivery technologies and supporting infrastructure. The pilot program aligns with the City’s goal to reduce pollution and congestion from the transportation sector, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions as outlined in the Council-adopted Climate Action & Adaptation and EV Action plans. The ZEDZ is a roughly one-square mile area encompassing Downtown Santa Monica, Main Street, and the Ocean Park neighborhood. LACI and the City have partnered with thirteen delivery, technology, and data analytics companies to test a wide range of urban delivery solutions in the ZEDZ area including small and large electric vans/trucks, an EV truck rental platform, e-cargo bikes, e-scooters, and remote control delivery vehicles (delivery robots). The pilot program includes eleven priority access curbside EV-only loading zones in Downtown Santa Monica and along Main Street that are being monitored and analyzed with video technology provided by a Los Angeles-based company called Automotus.
