The objective is for the region and Lahti to offer the best solutions for the challenges facing the world's cities and serve as a window on Finnish and international companies. The partners in the foundation are the cities of Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Vantaa and Lahti, several companies, the Finnish state and the Helsinki–Uusimaa Regional Council. The foundation has compiled and produced projects that will create business opportunities in the region based on clean and smart solutions. Among other things, the solutions concern transport, food, housing and energy.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration2The goal in Espoo is to ensure that the majority of feeder traffic to metro stations is handled with electric buses. Espoo is cooperating with electric buses companies and Helsinki Region Transport increase the number of electric buses significantly. In addition, Espoo has had trials of two robot buses without drivers and has plans to do more trials. One of the main goals in the trial runs is that Finnish companies could test their new services and products, for example different sensors. These companies have a prime opportunity to go along with the development of robotic traffic.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration3Espoo wants to be a partner and first user in the process of developing new solutions and also to provide a first-phase market platform in the energy sector. As an example, Fortum, leading clean-energy company, and the City of Espoo have agreed upon cooperation regarding the development of energy solutions and their implementation in Espoo. In 2016, the City of Espoo and Fortum signed an agreement on developing economically and ecologically sustainable urban solutions. Jukka Mäkelä, Mayor of the City of Espoo, and Pekka Lundmark, the CEO of Fortum, signed a newest agreement on 29 January 2018 to continue the implementation of shared energy objectives and the development of urban solutions. An additional goal of the parties is to challenge other operators to become involved in the development of energy solutions and business models. The aim of the efforts is to find solutions for significantly reducing the carbon dioxide emissions generated by energy consumption in Espoo by 2030. The goal is to increase Espoo’s appeal and competitiveness in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Through the cooperation with Fortum, city strives to promote the creation of business based on clean energy along with new products and services.

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration6Sustainable Energy Positive & Zero Carbon Communities (SPARCS): Espoo is looking for new, innovative solutions to develop energy-positive areas as part of a European joint project. A key objective of the SPARCS project coordinated by VTT is energy-positivity, which means increasing local surplus energy production by means of renewable energy production and energy efficiency. The aim is to achieve this by developing energy-efficient regional solutions based on local renewable energy sources for construction and mobility. Solutions are under development in two Lighthouse cities of the project, Espoo and Leipzig, and will be utilised in five successor cities. The project is part of a major challenge related to enabling changes in mobility and energy use and practising a more sustainable lifestyle. In energy solutions, the analysis focuses on regions instead of individual properties. Further improvement goals include electric mobility, functionality of transport hubs and carbon neutrality. The goal is to generate globally significant imprints for the city – new innovations. In practice, companies in Espoo develop and experiment with new solutions first at the local level and then export the best solutions globally (source: https://www.espoo.fi/en-US/City_of_Espoo/Decisionmaking/The_Espoo_Story/Sustainable_Espoo/Projects_of_Sustainable_Espoo).
13277154409City of EspooFinlandEurope6. Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration7Partnership model for sustainable neighbourhoods (KIEPPI): Espoo is developing new operating models for circular economy to promote the development of business activity, sustainable growth of the city and a sustainable way of life for the residents. The joint project of three major cities promotes districts in Espoo, Tampere and Turku based on the circular and sharing economy. In Espoo, the project supports company-oriented circular and sharing economy solutions. New products and services are being developed and piloted in the urban environment, particularly in the changing Kera district. The partnership model specifies the collaborative methods of the city, its residents, companies and educational and research organisations in order to implement the principles of circular economy in the planning and construction of districts (source: https://www.espoo.fi/en-US/City_of_Espoo/Decisionmaking/The_Espoo_Story/Sustainable_Espoo/Projects_of_Sustainable_Espoo).

Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration9Low-carbon transport in mobility hubs (6Aika): Espoo aims to promote low-carbon transport and develop travel chains to ensure that its current and future residents and companies could live and act according to the principles and goals of sustainable development. The joint project of the four major cities develops the preconditions for sustainable modes of transport in urban areas and aims to generate transport hubs bringing various modes of transport and people on the move together. A transport hub refers to a key point in public transport that is easily accessible by foot or bike. Smooth travel chains are possible in a hub thanks to easily accessible base traffic and complementary practical mobility services. Easy-to-use, reliable and safe mobility services that provide quick and frequent connections reduce the attractiveness of passenger cars in relation to more sustainable modes of transport, therefore reducing transport emissions (source: https://www.espoo.fi/en-US/City_of_Espoo/Decisionmaking/The_Espoo_Story/Sustainable_Espoo/Projects_of_Sustainable_Espoo).

Espoo and the whole Uusimaa region count with strengths such as a diverse and international business arena, strong network for partnerships, and strong research and development scene. The project will create the preconditions for sustainable growth in different city districts: Otaniemi and Keilaniemi will become unique research and development environments where smart poles technology is capitalized for new energy and mobility solutions; Kera will grow into an internationally known area for its smart and clean built environment, and Kiviruukki will become an agile platform for the implementation of a food system and circular economy. The action points are developed in collaboration with the City of Espoo, VTT, Aalto University, Omnia, as well as new business partners and other actors. The project action points are divided in the following working packages: 1. Management and impact 2. Smart and clean city 3. Digitalization opportunities 4. Clean tech demonstrations 5. Energy transition and electrification of transport 6. Sustainable public procurement, citizen engagement and communications The action points detailed in the working packages will have a short-, medium- and long-term impact on both carbon neutrality and the economy. The project will implement promptly deployable solutions as well as enable conditions for the future creation of jobs and competitivity. The impact on the competitive advantage and sustainability of businesses and research will be evaluated from the economic, ecological, and sociocultural viewpoints. During the project, a comprehensive framework for monitoring the impact of the environments will be created, together with concrete KPIs. Collaborative learning and development are essential for co-creating new solutions with all stakeholders. Through this project a great number of actions will be activated and carried out. With communication both to stakeholders and in collaboration with them, the importance of sustainable growth and sustainable lifestyle will be strengthened. The objective is to accelerate the transition towards the use of green and digital solutions in daily life. At the same time, this generates more demand and therefore sets the direction for future continuation work. Marketing and communications support the transition and demonstrate the direction through examples. The project will also bring clearer visibility on what can be the role of cities, research institutes, universities, companies, and citizens in the solutions towards a green transition and climate change mitigation.Project follows the horizontal principles (equality for all genders and ecologically, economically, socially and culturally sustainable development) by taking into account the special needs of different groups of people. New jobs is an important goal in the project and that beneficial to all society. New solutions developed inthe project will be targeted to all genders. In addition, different user groups will be taken into account in the designing and planning, marketing and communication of the solutions being developed.

Already in 2016, the City of Espoo and the Espoo-based energy company Fortum committed to making the district heating system in Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi fully carbon neutral. As a member city of the UN’s sustainable development leadership programme, Espoo has committed to developing solutions that support carbon-neutral urban life. Carbon-neutral district heating is a major climate action for the city, as the majority of the emissions of Espoo are generated from heating. Espoo’s and Fortum’s development work was accelerated in autumn 2019 by setting a new interim target to discontinue the use of coal in 2025. The 2020s carbon neutrality project is known as Espoo Clean Heat.
