13525444185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.0Please indicate the opportunities your city has identified as a result of addressing climate change and describe how the city is positioning itself to take advantage of these opportunities.2Describe how the city is maximizing this opportunity1Due to recent climate change, extreme climatic phenomena such as heat waves and cold waves are increasing rapidly, which causes energy consumption to increase and it is a cause of hindering greenhouse gas reduction. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the demonstration project for energy zero housing. It is hoped that a variety of technologies and ideas related to energy zero housing architecture will be combined to bring about a new paradigm change in the field of architecture. If a variety of technologies applicable to existing buildings as well as new buildings are developed, the development of the building industry is expected to breakthrough.

Opportunities6.0Please indicate the opportunities your city has identified as a result of addressing climate change and describe how the city is positioning itself to take advantage of these opportunities.2Describe how the city is maximizing this opportunity2We are trying to expand eco-friendly vehicles that do not generate mobile pollution sources such as electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles. It is expected that by 2050, the internal combustion locomotive will be completely replaced of an eco-friendly vehicle by improving vehicle manufacturing technology and expanding the charging infrastructure. In addition, the development of electricity and hydrogen production technology can be expected to transform into green energy.
13525644185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.0Please indicate the opportunities your city has identified as a result of addressing climate change and describe how the city is positioning itself to take advantage of these opportunities.2Describe how the city is maximizing this opportunity3Through the development of new and renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic, geothermal, hydrogen, and fuel cells, it is possible to accelerate its supply by improving price competitiveness. In addition, development in the technology industry that produces clean energy such as biogas generated from waste and green hydrogen through water electrolysis is expected
13525744185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.12Describe how your city plans to enhance ambition and scale up Climate Action Plan (integrated/adaptation/mitigation) and actions to achieve climate neutrality, net zero emissions, carbon neutrality or 100% renewables.0Based on the inventory data we have built, we established the 2050 carbon neutral city basic strategy in April last year through a quantitative approach. Through this, the direction and strategy for 2050 carbon neutrality in our urban environment were presented. Currently, the 2050 carbon-neutral master plan is being established through the Suwon Municipal Research Institute. Experts in related fields such as energy, transportation, urban planning, green space, and waste are participating in this research. We aim to develop a carbon-neutral city model suitable for urban areas with high population density and establish action plans for each sector. In addition to researchers, experts from each field are invited to hold relay seminars to forecast the state of national policy and technology development and reflect them in specific scenarios. We plan to improve local energy independence by expanding renewable energy centered on solar power and green hydrogen and utilizing waste energy. In addition, the smart grid project at the regional level can improve the efficiency of energy supply and demand, and the pilot project will serve as a basis for business expansion.

Information about major climate action projects in Suwon City is shared and reflected in policies through opinions.
13526444185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.2aPlease provide some key examples of how your city collaborates with business and/or industries in the table below.3Description of collaboration2Under the vision of “Suwon, a Sustainable City where Humans and the Environment Coexist”, in November 2017, Suwon City selected 152 indicators and 100 tasks corresponding to 57 targets and 10 targets. The Suwon Sustainable Development Council of 180 persons evaluates indicator implementation tasks and monitors detailed indicators. It is contributing to the growth of a sustainable public and local governance platform.

13526644185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.3Describe how your local/regional government collaborates and coordinates horizontally on climate action.2Description1Horizontal collaboration and coordinationThere have been leading efforts by local and regional governments in Korea to achieve global global goals and national carbon neutrality. In June last year, 226 basic local governments declared a climate crisis emergency, and in July, 87% (212 places) of metropolitan and basic local governments participated in the 'Carbon Neutral Local Government Action Coalition' was launched. At the P4G Summit held in Seoul in May of this year, 243 local governments all promoted the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Joint Declaration. Local and local governments in Korea have agreed to joint efforts together, and are participating in joint tasks by selecting a common task for practical climate action.
13526744185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia6. Opportunities6.4Describe how your local/regional government collaborates and coordinates vertically (higher levels of government) on climate action.0Local governments have formed the "Local Government Council for Energy Conversion" and the "Carbon Neutral Local Government Action Coalition" to respond to climate change. These organizations function as communication channels with the central government and play an important role in strengthening cooperation with the central government. These efforts of local governments are bringing about policy changes from the existing top-down method to the bottom-up method, which is a very effective way to change the policy paradigm to achieve national carbon neutrality.

13528944185Suwon CityRepublic of KoreaEast Asia8.0aPlease provide details of your renewable energy target(s) and how the city plans to meet those targets.11Comment1Suwon's energy goal uses several indicators. We aim to reduce the self-sufficiency rate from 12.7% to 18%, the rate of renewable energy supply from 4.1% to 10%, and the final energy consumption from 2,656,000 TOE to 2,523,000 TOE. Through the establishment of a basic plan for regional energy, Suwon has selected and promoted 21 unit projects in five strategic areas: industrial, public, commercial, household, and transportation. In the public sector, the installation of sunlight power plants and sunlight stations will be expanded, and the installation of renewable energy in schools will be expanded. In addition, it is expanding the installation of new and renewable energy in the home sector through green home and green village supply projects.
