Greening KwaDukuza CBD Library (2019-2021):As part of UrbanLEDS phase 2 project, the municipality has piloted the greening of one of its libraries with the objective of ensuring that the current water and electricity consumption of the library is decreased, thereby improving the energy and resource efficiency of the building. 2. Nokukhanya Luthuli House Project (2016-2019):The Municipality took a lead in the implementation of its adopted Green Building Guidelines by retrofitting one of its municipal buildings and some of the green building elements characterized by the project are as follows: -LED Sensor lights -Rain Water Harvesting Tanks -Double glazing of windows-Energy efficient air conditioner3. Groutville 20 Care Homes project: As part of UrbanLEDS phase 1 project (2013-2016), the Municipality piloted a demonstration project through rolling out energy efficient kit to 20 orphanage homes within KwaDukuza and solar powered the street lights along the 20 orphanage homes. The project objectives was to provide the residents with improved living conditions, cost savings, energy saving, improved food security and skills training. Ultimately, all of this will contribute to the reduction in carbon emissions and showcases what families can do in their homes. 4. King Shaka and Chief Albert Luthuli LED and Solar powered Streetlights Project (2014-2015): King Shaka street: 74 LED streetlights & 5 solar powered lightsChief Albert Luthuli street: 101 LED streetlights & 5 solar powered lightsPurpose of replacing existing streetlights with LED: Installation of energy efficient streetlights and to improve the image of the town as this project is part of the Corridor funded project, which is City Rejuvenation5. Insulated Cooker distribution project (2013- 2016):As part of UrbanLEDS phase 1 project, the Municipality also piloted this project to support 500 local citizens to reduce their energy consumption costs (and fire hazards associated with cooking) while improving their health and reducing food wastage, through the use of insulated passive cookers. The rollout was carefully designed using researched-based best practice, including beneficiary selection criteria guided by Operation Sukuma Sakhe.
