Governance and Data Management | 1.0 | Please detail sustainability goals and targets (e.g. GHG reductions) that are incorporated into your city’s master plan and describe how these are addressed in the table below. | 2 | Description | 3 | - Wellington city set a goal of planting two million native plants by 2025, and is set to achieve this goal by July 2021. Further goals will be set for a 2030 target. -To improve the city's biodiversity, Wellington supports a ‘Predator Free by 2050’ initiative, which includes targeting specific areas of the city across a staged approach. The first stage has seen the implementation of an extensive trapping network created in Miramar peninsula (3.5% of city area), where possums and stoats have now been eradicated and only low numbers of rats remain. The second phase will involve 19 suburbs, with an approximate home to 60,000 people. We have also developed an Urban Ecology GIS spatial tool that integrates weed control, restoration planting and pest animal control data in one place.-WCC has committed to monitor its birds and fresh water fish, and is developing our city Biodiversity Index, and will establish a baseline as part of the 2021 Long-term Plan process.- As part of our current District plan review, Council has been working with ecology and landscape specialists, and local Iwi to identify important natural areas of native bush and landscapes around the city. This project is known as Backyard Tāonga and covers important natural landscape, features, or areas of land with special wildlife, plants or trees that are native and important to the biodiversity of our city. There are currently over 160 land areas around Wellington that meet the criteria, and around half of these are on Council land. This is part of our obligations under the nationwide Resource Management Act (RMA) to identify Significant Natural Areas (SNA). -Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne is a Council Controlled Organisation. It is the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, with a 500-year vision to connect people with nature and help native wildlife flourish in Wellington and beyond. The 225-hectare ecosanctuary is a ground-breaking conservation project that protects over 40 rare native wildlife species.

Governance and Data Management | 1.6 | Please provide information on the overall impact of COVID-19 on climate action in your city. | 2 | Comment | 1 | Response | The response to the COVID-19 pandemic showed how quick action and a joined-up approach can achieve the desired outcome. We noticed a greater interest in the natural environment during this time, an increase in the casual use of parks and open spaces, and an increase in the understanding of our biodiversity and bird life. Awareness of climate change and our impact on the world around us has grown significantly over the past year, and we are seeing more pressure than ever from our city residents for the Council to support a faster reduction of city emissions.
