14642943937Wellington City CouncilNew ZealandSoutheast Asia and Oceania12.3Does your city have any policies relating to food consumption within your city? If so, please describe the expected outcome of the policy.2Please describe the expected outcome of the policy1Please completeCouncil is in the process of creating a Sustainable Food Plan, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Over the last several years Council has created an initial work stream around sustainable food system efforts, including community gardens and composting. The role of this plan will be to coordinate these efforts across Council and ensure that food system considerations are brought into Council’s decision-making process.WCC has the opportunity to engage more intentionally with food systems efforts to bring a diverse array of social, environmental, and economic benefits to Wellington. This plan outlines specific steps Council can take to grow this work and embed it within Council's decision-making processes.Key recommendations include:-Food security work stream-Establishing a Wellington Sustainable Food System Community Working Group-Become a city signatory of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact-Embedding food system concepts as a decision making criteria for Business Units across CouncilPotential beneficial outcomes:-Resilience: Wellington’s food supply enters the city through one main highway and one port. In the case of a natural disaster, Wellington’s main food delivery transport routes could easily be cut off. Expanding the local network of food production has the added benefit of making the city more resilient.-Supporting vulnerable communities: Wellington houses several low-income neighbourhoods that are not within walking distance of a grocery store. For residents of these neighbhourhoods, daily food access is an expensive and time consuming struggle. Expanding access to farmer's markets and community gardens would ensure vulnerable communities are supported to make healthy and cost-effective food choices.-Organic waste: Organic material represents 31.9% of general waste in Wellington Region. Reconnecting this waste stream into the food system through municipal composting is both a challenge and an opportunity for Wellington.-Leadership: Currently there is very little coordinated food systems action in Wellington at the municipal level. Wellington does not have an established action plan or working group set up to lead food systems work. This plan will help direct resources to those areas.

Note that waste from Wellington City is likely to be taken to this landfill, however these volumes may be more or less than actual waste generated depending on relative pricing between nearby landfills (for example, if our price is lower than neighbouring landfills, we may attract more waste from outer geographic areas, and the reverse is also true).

14644843937Wellington City CouncilNew ZealandSoutheast Asia and Oceania14. Water Security14.2aPlease identify the risks to your city’s water security as well as the timescale and level of risk.5Risk description1Wellington City suffers from a dual risk when it comes to water scarcity. Past summer droughts have brought water supplies to as low as 7 days of remaining supply, with the risk of worse droughts magnifying this. Additionally, water provides the vast majority of New Zealand's renewable power. If droughts affect the water supply to our hydro lakes and limit our energy capacity, whilst fossil energy becomes even more expensive, this will drastically limit our ability to be sustainable.
14644943937Wellington City CouncilNew ZealandSoutheast Asia and Oceania14. Water Security14.2aPlease identify the risks to your city’s water security as well as the timescale and level of risk.5Risk description2Wellington has a significant problem with aging water infrastructure. The problem presents itself in two ways - firstly the existing infrastructure is of unknown quality and some eras of pipe have a tendency to fail early and unexpectedly. This is magnified by the risks from earthquakes, which significantly increase leakage in a shaky place like Wellington. As sea level rise increasingly affects stormwater and wastewater systems, it is unknown how it will affect the water supply in a coastal city like Wellington.
14645043937Wellington City CouncilNew ZealandSoutheast Asia and Oceania14. Water Security14.2aPlease identify the risks to your city’s water security as well as the timescale and level of risk.5Risk description3Wellington is a coastal city. Though it has no rivers it has numerous streams - and many of those streams are beneath some of our most important roads in pipes. As the sea rises unexpected influences on those underground streams could result in flooding or destructive inundation. Additionally, the stormwater network is already finding itself overtaxed with rising seas, as assets become hydraulically locked when flooding is combined with high tide.
