Jambi city is located at the south-western portion of the Sumatera Basin. A segment of the Batanghari River, the longest river in the Sumatera, flows through Jambi City. The total area of Jambi City, concluded by the latest regulation, is 175,53 square Km or 0,41 of The Province of Jambi total area. Jambi city is the most populated city in Jambi Province, with 16,8% of the province's population living in this city. The population of Jambi city growth 1,31% each year (average). The city of Jambi is subdivided into 11 administrative districts (kecamatan) and 62 sub-administrative districts (kelurahan).
