11866569822KristianstadSwedenEurope2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.1Please list the most significant climate hazards faced by your city and indicate the probability and consequence of these hazards, as well as the expected future change in frequency and intensity. Please also select the most relevant assets or services that are affected by the climate hazard and provide a description of the impact.12Please describe the impacts experienced so far, and how you expect the hazard to impact in the future1The town of Kristianstad is protected by flood barriers. The barriers are a prerequisite for the town's existence, even under current climate conditions, since parts of the town is situated below sea water level. In 2002, the water level in river "Helge å" rose 2.15 m, the highest level since measurements began in 1905. This was a serious episode since one of the barriers were close to break, but emergency measures prevented serious flooding to occur. Since then, the flood barrier and pumping station systems are continuously being improved and expanded upon in order to to protect the town also under a changing climate.

Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.1Please list the most significant climate hazards faced by your city and indicate the probability and consequence of these hazards, as well as the expected future change in frequency and intensity. Please also select the most relevant assets or services that are affected by the climate hazard and provide a description of the impact.12Please describe the impacts experienced so far, and how you expect the hazard to impact in the future2Extreme rain events poses a serious threat for Kristianstad, since the town is located at a low altitude (even below sea level in some areas) and since water has to be pumped out through flood barriers. There are many low lying areas that will be flooded in case of a 100-year storm. More intense rainfall events with climate change will worsen the situation.
11866769822KristianstadSwedenEurope2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.1Please list the most significant climate hazards faced by your city and indicate the probability and consequence of these hazards, as well as the expected future change in frequency and intensity. Please also select the most relevant assets or services that are affected by the climate hazard and provide a description of the impact.12Please describe the impacts experienced so far, and how you expect the hazard to impact in the future3Main impacts so far are related to coastal erosion. With rising sea water levels erosion is expected to increase, which can affect buildings and infrastructure in the coastal zone, as well as tourism, cultural assets and ecosystems. Eventually, with rising sea water levels, coastal flooding risk can affect buildings and infrastructure.

11867769822KristianstadSwedenEurope2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city1The cost of expanding the flood barrier and pumping station systems is very high, in the order of billions SEK. This is a big number for a relatively small municipality and we rely on continuous support from state funding.
11867869822KristianstadSwedenEurope2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city2Large parts of the municipality is located close to or even below sea level. The town of Kristianstad is surrounded by water and wetlands and high water levels and flows (such as spring floods) in the river Helge å challenges our ability to adapt to climate change.
11867969822KristianstadSwedenEurope2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city3The municipality has a surveillance system – Flood Watch – to provide early warning for high water levels in the river. The municipal emergency service has high preparedness for flooding events and can setup temporary protective barriers in case of emergency.
