14275154110City of Santa Monica, CAUnited States of AmericaNorth America5. Emissions Reduction5.0aPlease provide details of your total city-wide base year emissions reduction (absolute) target(s). In addition, you may add rows to provide details of your sector-specific targets, by providing the base year emissions specific to that target.16Please describe your target. If your country has an NDC and your city’s target is less ambitious than the NDC, please explain why.1Between 1990 and 2020, Santa Monica reduced its emissions by 831,454 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (mtCO2e) to achieve 60% below 1990 levels at a rate of 2.1% per year. In order to achieve an 80% reduction by 2030, Santa Monica would need to reduce total emissions by an additional 277,860 mtCO2e, at a rate of over 10% per year, significantly increasing the scale and speed of reductions. This 'bending of the carbon curve' is essential to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement and avoiding worsened climate change impacts.

Emissions Reduction5.1Please describe how the target(s) reported above align with the global 1.5 - 2 °C pathway set out in the Paris agreement.0According to ICLEI's Race to Zero, in order to do its fair share in meeting the Paris Agreement Commitment, Santa Monica should reduce 2018 emissions by at least 62.9% by 2030 or in absolute terms, reduce emissions from 981,249MTCO2e (2018) down to 364,044 MTCO2e by 2030. Santa Monica's goal of reducing emissions 80% below 1990 levels equates to absolute emissions of 277,328 MT CO2e, so the goals are in alignment.
